How many languages are there in the world?
There are about a little less than 7,000 languages in the world, and about 28 percent of all languages are spoken by groups of less than 1,000 speakers.
there are currently 6,912 living languages, defined as languages that people speak today. Interestingly, the part of the world with the highest level of linguistic diversity is Papua New Guinea. The region has approximately 830 languages for around 5.4 million people. That's about one language for every 6,500 residents.
Keep some of these numbers and the wide diversity in numbers of speakers in mind for a moment. Let's look at a few figures. The continent of Africa is home to some 1,900 languages; Nigeria alone has over 400. The Americas, from northern Canada down to the tip of South America, are the home of about 900 languages, and this means of course mainly native American languages, the largest number spoken in Central and South America. Mexico has about 240 languages, and Brazil over 200. If we take a few more individual countries and ask how many languages are spoken within the borders, we find that Papua-New Guinea has no fewer than 850 of them, Indonesia 670, India 380 and Australia 250. Another 13 countries are home to some 100 languages each.
what a lot of information i learnt as well from searching.
hope this helps you.

There is no good way to distinguish languages from dialects. For that reason there is no answer to your question. But quite a few scientific books nevertheless give an answer. Usually the number given is around 5000. (By the way: Almost a fifth of them is spoken in New Guinea only.)
