Everyday my dog will bring a small pile of her dry dog food into our family room and leave it there. She doesn't eat it, she just drops it there-and it stays there until we pick it up. What's up with that?

Your dog is not storing the food for herself - she makes no attempt to hide it from predators. The fact that she brings it to your family room - an area she associates with you all - and just leaves it, says that she is feeding you. An instinctive pack action. She is contributing to the 'family pack' by providing sustenance. You confirm this to her by clearing it up each time - she thinks you're eating it!
If you don't mind her continuing, then I'd say let her do it. She is happy to be part of your 'pack' and it's mentally healthier to let her think she is doing her bit. Keep clearing it away quietly, don't fuss her or she may do it more.

It's a natural instinct. He is either hiding food for later or keeping it from other animals which I guess is the same thing. My dog does this with his toys. It drives me absolutely batty when I step on something like a bone, but cracks me up no end when he 'buries' things under a blanket or in plain sight. Keep in mind tho that I love my dog beyond all reason (and not in a bad way either.)

Dogs are pack animals. Back when they were wolves they would tear a piece of meat from a carcass and move to an area where the others couldn't take it from them. It is just an instinct like circling a few times before laying down left over.

A dog is a wild animal - they probably did hide some of their food for later when living in the wild.

dogs tend to store food to be eaten later. We used to have a jack russell that used to try and bury dog treats in the carpet. He would try and dig a hole and drop it in, then use his nose to cover it over. I guess he was trying to store it for the future in case he didn't have any other food available.

It's her "cache". She's got the instinct to hide it / bury it / save some for later. But since she's well fed, she never has the need to go back and retrieve it.

My dog did that to. I think it's just another form of marking territory! Rather that than it pissing and pooing in the corner!

Perhaps she has an imaginary friend!

Seriously, foxes often bury eggs and stuff for later. It might be similar to that.
