Well it is the Quality of sleep (sound sleep) that is more important than the Quantity of sleep. But still 6-8 hours of sleep is considered normal depending upon your age and nature of work.

Ive read some where that 8 hrs is optimal but you can get by with as little as a half hour. If you look at the SEAL training "Hell Week" those men will get about 4 hrs in a week. That phase, on paper, is three weeks long but the individuals involved say two weeks and a really long day. Healthy sleeping is a state of mind, in my opinion. Except in the case of children who in my experience as a father of three, the younger they are the more rest they seem to need especially babys. If you are operating heavy equipment or are going to drive you should probably listen to your body and ask your self if you have had enough sleep.

Depends on age.
For youngsters its better to get 10-12 hrs sleep.
For students 8 hrs sleep is must.
And for grownups 6-8 hrs.

It depends how old you are. If you're over fifty, no more than 4 hours. If you're a young buck like I am, 7 hours will do. Anymore than that, you will feel a little sluggish throughout the day. And of course, if you're a girl, they need their princess naps in the afternoon.
