my son in law.....has very fast feet and hands and his form of fighting is .....waling...flogging someone......can this be defended against

The bad thing about fighting is that you really have to do it to get good at it, I do not advocate that you buy into martial arts hook line and sinker, but unless you have fought before at some level, they are a great place to get basic instructions in a structured environment and to get use to what is going to be coming at you. It is just all but impossible to pick up fighting on the fly.

Putting that aside, I would try and corner him and keep in close, using my forearms, elbows, knees and head to fight him with. I am unsure what you really mean, but it sound like he take quick sweeping motions out at you, what you do by going in close is mute those hits so they feel more like an aggressive push than a hit. Find a wall and stand away from it like you would think two boxers would stand, distance wise and hit it as hard as you can (put a boxing glove on or put a pillow on the wall, I know it looks cool in the movies, but it will hurt real bad if you just go up against knuckles and wall alone.) then move in to a foot away from the wall and try and punch it and you will instantly see what I mean, your hit will not be nearly as hard as when you were backed up and had a running start at it. Then still standing a foot away, hit the wall with you forearm and you will see what I mean there too, you can get up a lot more force behind the forearm before the impact than the fist. The same is true for the knees and elbows too.

What you do is close in quick to avoid a shower fully formed hits from him, he will instantly start backing up trying to get some room to stage his attack, while you are in close, you are using your forearms to force him to go in the direction you want him to go, hopefully into a corner, simply keep hitting him on the side you want him to go, like turning a car wheel, he will back away from the attack trying to regain balance and room to counter, but lacking a corner, you are trying to get him to trip and fall, the ground in just as good as a wall {watch out for groin kicks while you are doing this}. Do not forget all you need is a foot or so to form this kind of attack, he needs at least an arms length, probably more. When you get him where you want him, use your body to keep him there and turn yourself so only one side of you is facing him, this gives him the least amount of you to hit, and then, using the elbow that is closest to him, simply start ramming it into his rib cage, stomach and sternum, kneeing him in the legs and lower stomach/back area when you can {keeping him off balanced is always a good thing.} You simply keep doing that until the guy gives up.

Your head, you use the bone as well as the mind, but do it very carefully, this can back fire on you. While you are fighting him, if you come to a point that you are real close and you know he is off balanced, in other words can not protect himself, head butt him as hard as you can into his nose. If you hit home with force you will disorientate him for about 10 to 20 seconds and that may not sound like much as you read this, but in a fight, when you are going at a guy full bore, you can end the fight in that 10 seconds easily. Most will never recover from it.

With any self-defense (actually, any martial art) there will always be some risk of injury, because you're moving. To learn self-defense, you must do the defenses on someone AND have them done on you (you'd be surprised how much understanding comes from feeling how the technique works). There are many styles that don't do in-the-ring style fighting. There are even some that do little sparring. All self-defense training, however, must contain some realistic attacks for you to defend against. The actual movements are only half of what you need to learn. The other half is training your mind to recognize the attack and select the appropriate defense without thought.

There is no "magic" technique or style that is better than others. There is also no substitute for experience. Your son in law sounds like he has little technique but plenty of experience. Train consistently and realistically with someone who has actual experience, not just a bunch of titles behind their name, & practice against a sparring partner with fast feet & hands who is wailing & flogging at you. In summary the best defense is good training.
But to be a little more technique specific I would only add that if you can't avoid this type of fight, I have found in my own MMA experiences that a good offense is the best defense-bring the fight to your opponent with your best attacks (whether punches, knees, tackle & choke, or whatever works best for YOU) and don't stop until you are certain you opponent is finished.

WOW, what a question! This ALL depends on whether you are talking about "play fighting" or an actual case of defending yourself. If you are "play fighting" you could be in trouble...you have to match his natural speed with skill and training. In other words, you should be able to block pretty much anything he throws because it is sloppy and a trained Martial Artist would be able to see it coming a mile away. Even then, I can tell you that raw speed is tough to defend against. Your best bet is to use a LONGER weapon than he does- your feet. As he closes, you kick...your legs are longer than his arms, you have better reach. IF he then tries to catch the kick, he will normally bend down- then pop him in the head with a punch.
Now if we are talking about a serious self defense situation...well, first call the cops. They have things called guns- each one has at least 6 little friends that are WAY faster than he is. If you are absolutely FORCED to fight- and by this I mean if you think you are really going to be hurt or killed- then you must be as brutal and as simply effective as you possibly can be. Again, your friend is a longer weapon like a kick to his knee. Even a moderately effective kick in the knee will make him bend down and at that point you should continue kicking at a much more easily reached head. Also, even though it sounds VERY simplistic, the basic technique of block/punch will work wonders. A fast fighter will usually try to land a flurry of blows to your head as fast as he can and NONE of them will be very effective or particularly damaging. The danger lies in the amount of them he lands. Simply block ONE of them- hopefully the first one he throws, or the one he throws with the most commitment- and blast him with a good right hand to the nose. You would be surprised at just how much a broken nose will take the fight out of someone- you have a hard time breathing, your eyes well up with tears and you have a hard time seeing, and it just friggin HURTS!
It would be nice to know what the circumstances of this are...are you in fear for your daughter? Yourself? Or is this guy just simply cocky as heck and you wanna bring him down a peg??

boxing or thai boxing= this guy doesn't know anything about fighting, those are easy to beat, double leg and then pass the gaurd mount, strikes and armbar, in that order and yes that easily
don't carry mace or pepper spray- im a millitary cop and we have that stuff, someone who is drunk or really pissed off can easily fight you while they have been sprayed, now you have a really pissed of guy with pepper spray all over him now trying to kick your ***, that stuff is messy and not overly effective till opts adrenline has gone down, don't get me wrong it hurts and burns like hell but it won't stop a person like they claim, we had 100lb girls easily fight through the pain and then we had to do some course after the fact
a good ASP or learning BJJ and thai boxing would work better
not fighting at all works the best though
someone who street fights is going to determine there own fate on how dirty they want this fight to be, if its clean then you can keep it clean, if they eye guouge or do cheap **** then you go one step above them take there arm or choke um out or heel hooks or moves that are going to equal the playing ground as far as brutality along with strikes, heel hooking some one and using punches is equally as brutal as fishhooking or eye gouging but in a diffrent sense. im not for fighting but when i got jumped by some frat guys i got eye gouged and double teamed, in the situation there were no rules, me and i buddy who did BJJ with me thank god made it out with minor cuts and a sore jaw, but 2 of the guys i went up against went home one with a popped elbow from an armbar and the other limped away from getting heal hooked, my buddy is more of a striker and knocked 1 guy out and choked the other out, that was 4 on 2
thats just an example of how rules can and can't play into a fight, VS if its just a one on one thing, i always let the other dictate wether or not they want to tap, snap or take a nap

Best defense is distance, I have been "attacked" 2 times by individuals that do as your describe. I create distance, let them wear down and then stop the fight. If I can't create distance, then I am going to move in on them and take away the wailing and flogging, when someone is doing that it uses to much energy, a simple block to incoming arms and handsword to neck or side of head, or thrusting front kick with end fight very efficiently.

Both times they never touched me, their movements will always be exaggerated and easier to react to.

fast hands and feet has nothing on a karate expert. they are trained to take them out (and by out i mean K.O. or death) within a couple strikes. they know all the vital areas and it only takes one hit. your son in law would have to be fast and keep a safe distance until he knows that he can hit them and then he would have to do this a few times. as for the best self defense against this is probably a good wrist lock or two. then he could not be able to hit you if you control him.

If you are that concerned, take something that:
1) spars
2) Uses an opponents strength against him (I'm assuming you are weaker)

Keep a couple of friends around and a non-lethal weapon. Also try doing ground based martial arts because the ground is a good equalizer.

Kung Fu San Soo would be great for or against him.
It is a fighting form in its purest form. Defending street fight tactics as well as weapons.

Test his cardio, he may seem fast, but he would probably get tired easily from throwing those fast punches and quickly moving his feet. Muay Thai and jiu jitsu seems to work great in any situation. Boxing is a must!!
