Here's the deal. I used to be a pretty decent runner. I am in the military, and we run 2 miles on Mon and Wed, and 5k on Fridays. I deployed to Afghanistan for 5 months, and barely ran while I was there. When I came back, I started getting shin splints. That was almost 7 months ago, and I still have them. I have my annual PT test in a few days, and I can't fail. What can I do? I already tried tylenol and caffeine before running, and I don't think they help too much.

I run with Asics GT-2110. They're supposed to be the right shoe for my foot type.

Ouch sweetie poor you, I know how much that really hurts, I get this due to illness. Firstly I would go see you Medical Officer, and then have a chat with your Commanding Officer, I have friends in the military and one had a back problem at the time of his PT test, it really took it out of him and he did fail it, but with the backing of his medical officer he re-tested a little while later and passed.
When I had shin splints, now not sure if you are in the UK or the USA, but in the UK you can get a gel in a tube called Voltarol, with is brill for muscular pain, and also Deep Heat again really good stuff. But I had some stuff brought for me made by a company called WELEDA - massage balm with Arnica, its for muscular and rheumatic pain, now I have a muscular skeletal disease, and trust me this stuff works wonders, smells quite a bit but not unpleasant and has relaxing properties too.
Also put your feet up whenever you can and rest your shins as much as possible.
Have you got your results for the other thing back yet?
Take care Hun, thinking of you ;-)

First if ur running in boots and utes try getting some insoles the 3/4 kind they're like 6 bucks at Walmart or Payless if your getting deployed soon, stock up! This will add a little cushion and if you are experiencing back pain or fatigue, while running, which im sure you are, this should lessen the pain if not make it go away completely. This will also help to lessen the shock to your knees while carrying heavy loads. These help me, I'm a cop and carry approx. 30 lbs in equipment daily. Hopefully will lesson the pain from shin splints too. Also think about your technique. If your worried about making up time and get winded or are just in alot of pain in general while running, posture can make alot of difference. When you run try not to cross you arms across your body, meaning when your arms swing forward dont let them swing in front of your body this will help to keep your rib cage open , meaning more air will get into your lungs. Ask around when PTing after the run or at the gym find the skinny guy (usually the fastest long distance runner) and ask him to do a couple laps with you and assess your technique. More than likely he ran track in High School and might have a few pointers for you. Also, this will sound a little gross, but before the run make sure you go to the bathroom this will help, the less you have sloshin around down there the better. And lastly stretch, stretch, stretch. Im not a coach or anything but I come from a long line of runners, and Ive never failed a run. Caffiene will only dehydrate you which you absolutely do not want to do while running. And tylenol isnt good for your stomach, generates acid and might cause you to puke.
