There are a lot of good suggestion already written here, and frankly I don't think which version you use will make a lot of difference when you read it. It may down the road when you start to study and look for teaching in it. Then you will want to get an accurate version and stay away from paraphrases versions like the NIV. The important thing is that you allow God to teach you while you read. In James 1:5 it says, "...if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him." This is a promise from God that if you ask Him He will give you wisdom as you read. So, when you read it, pray in your heart and ask God to open it up to you. It is a spiritual book and needs the Spirit of God to direct you.

A lot of people like the King James Version. I was raised with it and I never did get a good handle on what was being said however. So when I was an adult, I got a New International Version. I checked in the front to make sure it was translated directly from the original languages, and it was.

When one reads the Old Testament in that, it's more like reading the stories in a way we can relate to and understand. Nobody speaks in 1611 English anymore and that's is what the King James Bible is translated into.

i think the kjv is the most accurate. but if you don't like the old english i would suggest the new king james version. i like the niv to. i would strongly recommend that you research where it came from and how it was tranlsated before you trust it. there are so many translation out there.

i would also suggest reading the new testement before you read the old.

acient Hebrew might be a good choice as well. Hebrew is actually pretty easy to learn. there are 22 sysmbols and each symbols means something. so A means ox and respresents power or leadership. B means house and represents a family or an organisation. put the two together AB means the leader of a house. so AB means father. it gets more complicated but that the basics.

why should we have to trust translators when we can read the Bible in it's original form?

That is a good way to start, or there is a New King James version. I use a New International Version (NIV) Study Bible, and it makes things alot clearer and easier to read.

I love the NIV Study Bibles. They explain what the
verses mean. The Old Testament has the most
amazing stories in it. I can become captivated
forever...

You are right, on all counts! The Alexander Scourby link below is good because when you listen to the KJV version as well as read it, you don't get distracted by the old-style punctuation. (Later, when you get used to it, you won't notice.) Audio KJV is also purchasable in MP3 and DVD formats. The answer to Every Problem in the World is there.

You might want to read a newer version. The Old Testament is hard enough to understand, without all the "ye's and "yea's."
