our westie attacks the letterbox and anything that comes through it. if she can't get to it, ie. if the doors shut etc, but hears the post she will attack anything thats handy then whine till she can have a go at the letterbox and the post. how do we stop her.

i think thats pretty interesting actually, but you could perhaps curb her attacking the post by using those dog products that when applied to areas, the dog will not chew on. but that will not stop her from attacking anything thats handy til its "go time". OR (my preferred method) you could send doggie treats in the mail or sneak them into an envelope and put them in the mailbox then walk her to the "cookie box" (instead of calling it the "mailbox" or whatever you call it) and collect her treat from the envelope in the mailbox. let her sniff the envelope w/the dog treat in it while still at the mailbox and she will be HAPPY about the mail. boy, my dog would love that! good luck :)

It's a dog game. You have to encourage another dog game that gets her a reward. Start by enlisting help to put in a piece of paper in the letter letterbox, with you having her on a leash a making her sit. As she continues to leave it alone, give her a reward. Dogs love to please us and get rewards. You can change her behavior. You may have to do this for some time though.

You can get a box to cover the letter box and stop the dog from eating the post

did you try dog training?
punishing her when she does that?
there is always the option of getting a P.O. box at the post office. get the mail there on your way back from work or somthing.
or if you know when the mail comes like 5 minutes before try to get her occupied.
hope this was helpful to you, but i have never heard of a dog that does that.

I think you need to talk to a vet or a animal behavourist in your area .. it seems they have bad associations with mail/mailbox maby they feel the mailman is intruding in there area and the mailbox/mail is the reason .....
