Piles are abnormally enlarged and dilated blood vessels ( mainly veins) around the back passage or anus. Piles are also known as "hemorrhoids". Hemorrhoids occur in both men and women most often between the ages of 20 and 50.
"Its no rare thing, for the Haemorrhoidal Veins, to be distended, and Even Corroded, by the Resort of a Blood full of Acrimony thither. A grievous pain accompanies it; with an Inflammation. And oftentimes a Flux of pure Blood follows…. The Seat of it, in the Parts of Dishonour, which can't be mentioned among people of any Breeding without a sort of Blush, seems to oblige the Sufferer unto Self-Abasement."

Causes Treatment of Piles
Hemorrhoids, also known as piles or rectal lumps, are a very common problem. Swollen veins around the lower end of the anus are the result of increased pressure which causes them to bulge and get bigger.
Causes of Piles
The most common cause is due to straining during bowel movements. Piles are associated with constipation, anal infections, being overweight, with people whose work involves heavy lifting and in some diseases such as liver cirrhosis.
Sign and Symptoms of Hemorrhoids (piles)
Itching around the anus.
Pain, sometimes very severe, especially during bowel movements and whilst sitting for long periods.
A lump or lumps near the anus. This is often associated with a feeling of bulge or that something is in your bowel.
Blood loss from the anus, bright red in color, usually seen when wiping following a bowel movement it can also be in the stool.
Diagnosis of Hemorrhoids (piles)
On examination your doctor will usually be able to make a diagnosis quickly.
Sometimes a sigmoidoscopy (a small camera put into the lower end of the bowel and rectum) may be required.
Treatments for Hemorrhoids (piles)
Sometimes no treatment is required and the pile or piles spontaneously improve. There are a number of products available, such as corticosteroid and lignocaine products from your pharmacy that can sooth the itching and pain, diminish the swelling and stop bleeding. These come in suppository form, as creams or lotions. Witch hazel on cotton wool, applied to the outer anus can help with itching. Cold compresses and warm baths can also help relieve symptoms. Using stool softeners, eating a high fiber diet and drinking plenty of fluids to avoid constipation should also improve your discomfort.
If these treatments for your hemorrhoids do not work your doctor may advise one of a number of surgical procedures that are available- Tying a rubber band around the piles until they shrivel and disappear, injecting a fluid into the piles (sclerotherapy), or surgically cutting them off (haemorrhoidectomy).
Go see your doctor if:
Your piles get worse and keep returning.
You have unexplained weight loss
You suffer constant fatigue. This may be a result of regular blood loss and anaemia or signs of an undiagnosed disease process.
You experience a change in your bowel habits.
You get mucus in your bowel movements.
You have dark colored blood in your stools (faeces)
You have lost a significant amount of blood and feel dizzy and light headed. A call to emergency services should be considered when any large amount of blood is lost.
