Mav thinks about question on if Christians would tell their children to go ahead and believe whatever they want.
We, as parents, train our kids to do what's right and for Christians (and many faith groups) that includes going to worship service.
We expect our children to follow our rules until they leave home - come in before a certain time, clean up after yourself, go to worship service.

Is that brainwashing or just being a parent?

Mav speaks like she does, because Mav speaks like she does. That is all.

As parents, people must teach their children what they believe is right. Curfew, clothing choices, and brushing their teeth are typical. Religion is included in teaching what a parent believes is right. As young adults, all people will choose for themselves. Many atheists grew up in religious homes. There's no "brainwashing" in what you describe. All any parent can do is teach their children what they believe is right, and that includes religion.

First of all, I've been wanting to ask Mav why Mav always talks in the 3rd person about Mav when she is Mav? But to answer your question, if one thinks that teaching your child good things is brainwashing then that's pretty sad. What is a parent supposed to do, teach them wrong things? Or nothing at all?

That is called being a Godly Parent. All children need structure and discipline in their life. Spiritual training is also our responsibility remember it is our duty to God to bring them up in the Lord. Spiritual warfare is vary real and is hardly brain washing. Don't worry they will check out other religions, churches and some bad stuff. I pray Please God don't lead me into temptation I can find it on my own( not really but it seems that way). I am 51 and was raised Catholic, I've studied many religions some seriously some just for information. Jesus Christ is the way, the Truth, and the Light. I worship in a Christan Church no more Catholic.

Tony sips his coffee too and ponders Mav pondering..it's a ponderous task...which will led to a ponderous headache..But why teach these little, angelic miscreants anything?..To grow up like us??
Maybe the best we can do is teach them the Law of the Jungle...at least they'll have a chance to survive..for the rest they can make the same mistakes we make...and pay the same price..

It is being a parent, and it is our duty to teach our children right from wrong, they are not born knowing that. We can only do the best they we can, am I right? Kids turn out to be a mixture of parental and outside influences, plus some are good listeners and some are not. If their brains need a good scrubbing, so be it. When they are of age, THEN, they can do whatever they want.

God Bless You

Forcing them to worship anything (And giving the no choice in the matter) is brainwashing. Teaching them morals and ethics, even using parables to do that is parenting. It's up to them to decide whether they want to worship something.

When you start in with the "God is love. If you don't accept this and go to church every week, you're going to be tortured forever in hell! (in the name of his 'love')" it wanders back over to brainwashing and borders emotional abuse.

Besides which, personally I think the bible is wholly inappropriate for children. It's filled with violence, hatred and intolerance, sex, and graphic murder. I hope as a good parent you wouldn't expose children to such horrible things.

Hi Mav:

No, I think that teaching your religion to your kids is a wonderful thing. If you know your religion well and are comfortable with it it makes you a stronger person in life! And whatever choices you make later have a strong foundation.

Salamaleikum.

I belive it is giving the children education and a chance to either accept or reject what is on offer. I brough both my kids up in the church. One refused to go to services when she was 15 the other continued. Thats fine by me. Now neither of them go, thats fine too, they have been educated and chosen...;

We do what we believe is best for our children, although often that is clouded by our own issues. We have to have rules, because we cannot protect them if we cannot exercise some control over them, yet we know they have to learn to protect and control themselves one day.

None of it's easy.
