Um well it depends on the breed of the bird. Even if you have a bird that might mock you, such as a cockateil it can take some work. Listen carefully to your pet. I have two cocka teils. The male is talking. The female is older and she does not talk. I've had her since she was hatched. She is now five years old. She talks in other ways. She is very sweet and gives kisses. She'll spread her wing and tail feathers to show them off for me. Yet she don't say a word. The young male however talks but would as soon bite your finger off as to look at you. See if your bird is communicating in a different way than just talking. With the male my husband and I use small phrases with the same tone and the same words. There are even tapes that you can purchase and play over and over again. This is a good idea while your at work. Stay with one word, till the bird picks it up, then go to another.

It's not a parrot? I don't know this for sure, as I'm trained with exotic parrots, mainly the larger species...but I don't think you can teach a non-parrot to talk. With the exception of a black crow/myna bird, you probably won't get it to talk. If we're talking like a finch or something, hang it up. Your bird is too small, and not an advanced enough species to speak.
