Same reason as squirrels bury nuts! A food store for later if things get rough.
They don't need to eat them right away and want to save them for later and they need to make sure that no other dog eats it for them.
One of our dogs, sadly long deceased, used to bury Jaffa Cakes. He loved them but we once bought a job lot and there were too many. They looked great in the flower beds as he wasn't too skilled at the burying bit and used to leave them showing.
