There are many fad diets on the market these days, some encouraging fast weight loss in as little as 3 days etc etc. However, if you want to seriously lose weight in a healthy way so you can actually keep the weight off permanently then these diets are not for you (or for anyone for that matter!).
Adopt a few simple practices in your life to lose weight.
Exercise daily for about 45mins. A brisk walk everyday will do you wonders physically and mentally. Thats all you need to do, seriously. If you are more active then jog or run instead but a good brisk 40min walk everyday will seriously start shedding excess weight if you keep it up. Take some small hand weights with you if you want to work out your arms. ( i like to use my shopping bags when i walk home from the supermarket! ) Incorporate stretching exercises such as Pilate's or Yoga if you have enough time. You can do these in your own home, no gyms needed, they are a waste of time and money.
Its not rocket science, its common knowledge that being physical will lose those unwanted pounds...
Then of course eat properly. 5 + Veges, 5 + Fruit, Essential fatty Acids, Spirilina, A bit of protein, A lot of grains, there are plenty of good carbs...that wole anti- carb thing is ridiculous. Maybe just change white flour for wholemeal flour. Change butter for Extra virign Olive oil. Change spreads for hummus...remember Fat is not evil, fat can actually help you maintain a good weight if the right fats are eaten properly, like avocado and oil and nuts for eg.
Stay away from as many factory packaged goods as possible. Think fresh, Think grown from the earth.
Also eat smaller portions than usual, try and only eat half of what you would easily finish in usual circumstances, your appetite will be less if your are exercising anyway, i assure you. I find when I am more active I have less time to eat!
Oh and sleep is also a good way to lose weight. The less tired I am the less hungry...Just start tomorrow...Adopt a few healthy regimes in your daily routine and see the difference, slowly but surely.
Even for a few days you will see a wonderful difference because the difference is all in your mind!
Hope this helps. Ciao

Hey, it's almost New Years. What a great time to make a resolution to lose weight! I wish you the best of luck in it.
You really have to look at two areas of your life and adjust them to match your goals:
* Diet
* Exercise
You simply can't get around these two facts. You have to consume fewer calories than you burn each day to loose weight. So if you don't change your diet, then you'll have to exercise more. Frankly, it's easier to adjust both things. Eat less, or eat smarter and exercise moderately. You don't have to go overboard. A 20 minute walk around the block is exercise.
Find someone who can share the goal with you. Another overweight friend who will walk with you. That helps a lot. You can encourage each other.
Here are a few other resources that might be helpful to you:

Good luck! Hopefully this time next year, you'll be a fraction of your former self ;)

Strength training is best. It adds muscles to your body, which will increase your metabolism, meaning you will burn more calories at rest. Combine a good strength training routine with a cardio routine and a proper diet, and you will lose weight easily.
You don't need any special equipment to do strength training. You can get a set of inexpensive dumbbells (the kind you manually change plates on) at any sporting goods store or department store (I get mine at Wal-Mart). And get a swiss ball to use instead of a bench, and you can get a good strength training workout for under $50.
And don't worry about getting too big and bulky. Women don't have the testosterone needed to get that big. The female bodybuilders you see are either a freak of nature or on steroids (most likely the later). And besides this, nobody gets "too big" overnight from strength training. It is a slow process, and takes many, many years even for men for to get big and bulky.

Jogging and yoga will help to loose weight and in good health,
Eat three balanced meals. reduce fats and starch foods, especially fast foods. lots of fruits and vegetables and good protein foods.
Never skip a meal, you end up eating more than what you would have had in two meals.
