Given the advice from some of my other questions, I went to the PetSmart webpage to investigate certain issues for my dogs. Offhandedly I noticed a "doggy daycare", thought it a cute idea, and checked it out. Imagine my shock to find that a major pet store practices breedisim... they will not accept *any* "bully breed" or any dog that looks like a bully breed.

Now, I do not care that it is a service that I, nor any smart bully owner would probably ever *use*, they have bought into and are *promoting* the bad rap against our beloved pets! A *MAJOR* petstore, *advertising* that they refuse a service to a certain group.

PETCO, offers the same rescue/adoption services, and gives *every* dog the same chance, they must all pass an equal test.

Here, then, is the question: Do you not agree that this deserves a boycott of PetSmart?

No, not the exact same... I've added more information and narrowed down that its not the refusal of service that angers... it is the advertising of that refusal, thereby adding to the misinforming of the truly uneducated (as far as bully breeds go) masses.

I know I'm not going to shut them down, I'm just doing my best to hurt them in the pocketbook a little.

I've never worked for a pet store, but I have helped at shelters for much of my life.

I well never go to petsmart again. If pitty owners would ban together and boycott not only companies but cities, counties and states that place bans on pit type dogs we could make a difference. There are over 5 million pit owners in this country if only half would stand together It would send a message.
With the very large amount of pits you would think if they are a "loaded gun' there would be far more attacks than is now. There are four breeds of dogs that are considered pits, bull terrier, American staffordshire terrier, staffordshire terrier and American pit bull terrier, yes it is a breed, it is what they are called in England. This years grand champion was one.

No it all comes down to numbers... The number of owners who have bully breeds & would use their servies vs the number of people who do not & would not use their services if they allowed them. PETSMART is a buisness & not a NON FOR PROFIT company. I am sure the math & research was done & they figure they would lose more money by allowing bully breeds.

It is not just breeds....

Pet Evaluation
A pet profile will determine the personality and temperament of your dog to make sure all dogs are social and healthy before enrolling. This helps ensure a safe environment and positive Doggie Day Camp experience for all our four-legged friends. Proof of current vaccinations is also required.

Admission Requirements
Must be at least four months old
Spayed or Neutered
Have the following vaccinations: Rabies, Distemper, Parvo, Corona, Bordatella
Dog must pass the Pet Evaluation to enroll

So they do the same thing pretty much

It is money.... I am sure that the bulk of their income they get from the sales or products & not services. Chance of a lawsuit for buying a rubber bone? Maybe 1/10th of 1%. Chance of a lawsuit for having your dog injured by another dog? Prolly 80% with no rules. 50% with rules & all breeds/types. 10% with rules & screening.

Stay out of PetSmart. Who cares? You aren't going to shut them down.

They have the right to protect their corporation from a "loaded gun" whether it be a human burglar, a bully breed or ANY OTHER BREED that threatens the store patrons, employees or the well being of another patron's dog.

Its not YOU that they are worried about unless YOUR dog is a potenial harzard to their company. Its the stupid owners that don't have their dog properly socialized so other dogs aren't being attacked while participating in PetSmart's programs.

They have surveys about the services they offer and its John Q Public who determines whether any dog is tolerated in puppy daycare with other breeds including their little foo foo pooches. John Q Public is the bread and butter of the PetsMart Corporation.

Sorry your breed is facing another brick wall in society because of poor breeding practices and training on the part of the owner. The "Bully" breeds aren't the ONLY breed that has problems. Unless the breed owners do a complete 360* (which is unlikely) you will continue hitting these brick walls.

Your breed is already being banned in other places besides PetSmart.
So stay home... you aren't hurting anyone but your breed's reputation.

As you know Breed selection (not Breedism) is a law that places have to abide by. You are trashing a chain when it is only that individual store. We have three Petsmart stores that we do adoption through and only one is inside the legal boundaries that we can not take pits. Help change the laws not trash companies that have to abide by laws.

While I don't know what your referring to in your question...I will say this. In my 20 years (grown up years) of being a dog, cat, bird, fish, hampster, rabbit, owner I have frequented PetSmart, Petco and numerous Mom & Pop Pet and Feed stores. On two different occasions, at two different Petcos in two different cities I have found worms crawling out of my dogs treats after one week of purchase from their "free for all" bins. I tried Petco again almost two years ago. When I walked in, it had a horrible pet pee smell, the store was dirty and half of what I was looking for had no price labels on the shelves. I have NEVER had a bad experience at PetSmart. I guess you get what your environment offers!

Didn't you just post the exact same question 2 days ago? I still say no to the boycott. I wouldn't want my chihuahua in the same room as a pitbull. What if a fight broke out? Dogs are dogs, and even if they've been raised to be gentle, there are still things that could set any dog off. PetSmart doesn't want to be liable for something going wrong. Makes sense to me why they ban "bully breeds".

its a liability thing, yes its not fair, but these dogs run around together, and its safer for the animals if they dont have those breeds. i dont know what they include in those breeds tho, so thats the part that bothers me, hopefully they are going to include chows and german shephards (in my area german shephards have been involved in about 60% of all attacks). they just cant take the chance of these more agressive breeds because they would be sued and and stuff like that. i know its not the breed that makes the animal, but there are breeds out there that do seem to be more likely to cause problems, so they are just trying to avoid that upfront.

Good on ya, MotherBear! The more pittie owners who find out about this the better, spread the word!

I say no but it would not kill them to keep and eye on big dogs. Not refuse them but just keep an extra eye when they have small dogs in the store.

No. What they mean is... a dog that is aggressive! Some dogs are...and they can't have a bad *** dog in doggy daycare, now can they??
