Everyone would want the bus stop in front of their house, but no one would want a bus stop in front of their house.

Everyone wants the convenience of not having to walk far to the bus stop, but no one wants the hassle and inconvenience of having people standing in front of their house waiting for the bus!!

i.e. -- everyone wants something done about something, especially if it is helpful to them, but no one wants to deal with the fallout or inconveniences or negative side of what is being done.

NIMBY = Not In My Back Yard .... solve homelessness, but don't put a shelter in my neighborhood ...etc.

"Everyone would want the bus stop in front of their house" - people are lazy and don't want to walk two blocks to the bus stop, they want the bus to be convenient to them.

"but no one would want a bus stop in front of their house" - hey, it brings down the property values, and then there's all those strangers standing in front of my house, and why should I share my bus with them? Let them get on after me, or I won't get a seat.

Interpretation - people are selfish. (Wow, I'm cynical)

Literally: It means that everyone would want the bus to stop outside their house so that it becomes easy to get a bus and get dropped. Whereas, no one would want a bus-stop outside their house because it would create a crowd and commotion outside their house which people would not like.

Metaphorically, it implies that people like convenience when they require something, but the same thing must be avoided or shunned as soon as they do not need it any longer.
This statement implies HYPOCRISY.

Every one wants to go to heaven, but no one wants to die.

They would want to be dropped off at the doorstep but would not want to deal with the traffic and noise of people getting off of the bus and waiting for the bus in front of their house because its an invasion of privacy.

we would want the bus to stop in front of our house when we needed or had to take the bus, but we wouldn't want it to be there all of the time as aconstant reminder of how poor and lazy we were because we didnt have a car and lived a shitty part of town, probably on welfare, cause those neighborhoods are usually on the bus routes.

Aaah! I know what you're trying to imply here..It's nice to not have to walk so far to catch a bus but at the same time you don't like the bus to stop right infront of your house cos if that happens, you wouldn't be comfortable.

My mother in law lives quite close to me, it's very easy for me to ask her for help but that doesn't mean i want her to live with me!?

It's already been said, but the moral of the story is: People like convience as long as it doesn't inconvience them.
