Yes, I work at the airport in baggage. I see them all the time, but usually in a box designed for shipping bicycles. Or some people take their bike apart and ship it in any hard suitcase. If you do that you can lock it. (buy a TSA lock at any local store)
Just make sure you check with the airlines on what their policy is. Like someone else said, I'm sure there will be a charge!

It is called CHECKED Luggage, and yes, it can be shipped by air -- you have to check with the carrier you are flying with to determine if there is going to be an extra charge for this object (most will charge you for oversize object), and what their packaging requirements are for shipment of the Bicycle.

yes, but you willl have to pay extra as it goes in as cargo. My friend is in cycling competitions in europe and he frequently takes his bike to different countries for the races

you can check pretty much anything that they dont consider a threat, but remeber theres always a risk of getting your bike lost, alot of things get lost when they get checked
