If you just need to find out with wich codec an AVI file is encoded, you should use AVIcodec, a freeware program. You open an AVI with this program and it tells you which audio and video codec is used with this file and if the codec isn't installed on your system, it gives you a link to a download page with that codec.

If you need information about the technical background of a specific codec, there is a page on Wikipedia that lists a lot of audio and video codecs and links to the specific explanations.
