Okay, here is my opinion, take it for what it is worth.
I would be offended ... why? because if I did something really kind for someone, it was because I wanted to act in a kind way ... far above monetary compensation.

Here are some suggestions ....
if the person is poor ... then wait for an opportunity to purchase something they need and cant afford .... a new computer, car repairs, etc, and in that way return the favor.
if the person is of moderate income, give them a gift in $100-250 range, like a day at the spa, a gift certificate to a really nice restuarant, or a weekend getaway all expenses paid ($500 or so). And tell them that it is something you want to do for them because what they did for you meant so much.
ALternatively, or in addition ... give the $2000 or the balance after a gift, to a charity that they would approve of, and give them a card, saying you have donated in their name at this charity, to commemorate their thoughtfulness.

To put this in perspective-If he did something so great for you that you want to give him $2000, then yes it's tacky because a little more thought should be put in if he's that special. Depending on your means of living and if $2000 to you is like a ten to the average person, I would say no to cash, make it special.

$2000 dollars is waaaaaaaaayyyyy to much money! You could do better things with that kind of money. Maybe go on a nice cruise or buy your family Christmas gifts with that money!

If he is already a quite well-off guy, giving him $2k mind be tacky when you could have been more thoughtful in buying him something worth $2k. On the other hand, if you know he could put that $2k to good use, by all means, give it to him.

People say ooohhh noooo don't give cash, give gift cards, but what if person wants to spend 1000 at best buy and 1000 at target, err whatever, they can't do it because you got a gift card to dell.com, tell them you want them to spend it on WHATEVER THEIR HEARTS DESIRE, give a good card and its totally kosher!
