I agree with you 100%. I fought in WW2 and was lucky to make it back alive and well. I would go now if I wasn't so damned old.
The kids of today are soft, arrogant and don't know what it is to be an American. Everything is taken for granted. Cars, cell phones, you name it. They have it. All 18 years and older should be drafted for at least 2 years and made into men. Mandatory service is standard in many nations throughout the world. It should be mandatory in the USA as well.

Conscription has its merits. For one, Americans will finally earn the title of American through service to the Country. However, instead of only military option, I would advocate for a Federal Service obligation. That could mean doing something in education, building physical infrastructure, military, etc. Every citizen, male or female, has a mandatory two years of Federal Service following high school. Six years would be a bit too much, considering that if people go to college, they will be on average getting Bachelor Degrees at age 28 (heavily impacting the work force). Secondly, the US military would not need recruiters and will always be fully manned (and no longer stretched like now). No more spending millions on "Army Strong" or "The Few. The Proud. The Marines" commercials. No more pesky recruiters.
But there are also definite disadvantages to a draft. First off, those who are drafted will undoubtly not be very happy to have been forced in such a situation. Unless given competent leadership, morale and disciplinary problems will emerge from within the ranks. Secondly, there may be ways around a draft for those who have rich and influential families, which raises the question of fairness. Third, not all males (and females) are suited for the military life. It would be a waste of time and resources to force them in. Dead weights are not useful for the military. Fourth, as one of our most cherished values is freedom, it would be hypocritical for us to take peoples' freedom away for a while and force them to complete military service. Fifth, "If a country can't save itself through the volunteer service of its own free people, then I say: Let the damned thing go down the drain!" - Robert Heinlein. Sixth, the amount of resources (ie benefits, payroll, gear, training, etc) expended to take care of the new huge flux of servicemembers will be very considerable. Going to get rid of the F-22s and V-22s for that?

The Draft and a Tour of duty would transform a young person to a better, responsible adult, install the feeling of belonging to our great nation, and produce a healthier/better Society.
This in general was the belief of many ancient nations.
To day, and for our Nation, we need to seriously re-address this issue nationally, but alas; the Vietnam fiasco, and a few others as such have spawned the "losers" of politicians that use this issue as their agenda.
I say take it to the people in a referendum, let Americans decide
and speak on this issue.
God bless and protect your children!

if the pnac guys can still push their imperialistic agenda then they'll have to put in the draft....ultimate goal: the Caspian Sea and it's one last untapped massive oil reserve. that's why they're trying to leap-frog up to it building hardened army bases along the way. of course man's goal and their puppeteer Satan's goals are two different animals...Satan simply wants to inflict as much pain and misery as he can before he's taken out by Jehovah God, now who wouldn't want a part in that?!!! carry a big gun and shoot people!! yippeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
of course it's all fun n games till your buddy gets blown away and then you die a slow death at home from Depleted Uranium contamination. oh well......it made for some good pictures

in a free country, forced service is anti-thetical. you should be free to choose if you want to serve in that capacity.
not to mention that a limit on soldiers available tends to make politicians think twice about sending soldiers in to unnecessary conflicts. more money makes it easy to spend more money, same with troops.

I agree I think it should be mandatory to do service for our country. I would be ashamed if I were to think my life was some how worth more than anyone else.

I believe in things that will actually solve problems. The Iraq war sure has helped many things hasn't it. Human governments have never solved our problems entirely and they never will. And, you're a joke to believe that it does.
