It's extremely difficult to put down a pet you've had for so long. I sypathize with your friend. I've been there.

Two years ago, our family cat -- he was 17 -- started acting much the same way as your friend's cat. The vet told us that he was dying slowly and painfully, so it was decided to put him down and end his misery. It was a difficult decision and very painful, but we all know it was the right thing to do. Watching him suffer would have been cruel.

Is your friend's cat suffering? If so, then the humane thing to do would be to put him to sleep. If not, then I see no reason why the cat should not be allowed to die peacefully in his own home with those who love him.

The problem with this is that the cat can't tell you if he/she is in pain...obviously the cat is dying, so the only thing your cousin is doing is prolonging the cat's suffering as the cat is slowly starving to death. Most often animals go that way because their owners are the ones that don't want to accept that their babies are dying and try to keep them for as long as possible, much to the detriment of the poor animal. As long as the owner is present and comforting the poor kitty, the setting really doesn't matter!

As long as the little guy is not in pain, I see no reason why the kitty shouldn't enjoy his last weeks at home. Your cousin just needs time to say goodbye.

Honestly,, I wouldn't put the cat down. After all these years few together any few hours is countable. I will keep him around as long as I can as long he is not in pain. I sorry for your friend for losing his companion but he has to deal with it sooner or later.

aww... I'm so sorry to hear that. I love cats, but it's not right for it to suffer. check the phone book, there are ones that will come to your house and put him to sleep. then he can be at home and still be put out of his misery.

unless he's not suffering but I imagine if he's not eating he is suffering.
