Cholera is caused by bacteria that damage the intestinal lining and cause such severe diarrhea that up to 15 liters (about 4 gal) of liquid per day are lost. The bacteria spread through polluted water or raw fruit and vegetables in places where hygiene is poor. Get medical help immediately. Drink as much non-alcoholic fluid as you can. If your illness is diagnosed as cholera, you will be hospitalized. The main treatment is to replenish body fluids directly into your vein. You may also be given antibiotic. You will probably recover completely within two weeks.
