It depends. Caffeine dehydrates you and causes you to retain water. You lose weight better with lots of water. A lady at Jenny Craig put it this way, "If your hands are dirty and need to be cleaned, you aren't going to get them very clean by washing them with diet coke or unsweetened iced tea!" She ticked me off because she was right and I really like tea.

There is still sugar in drink and as you know sugar turns into fat so you still want to be careful and drink lots of water. When I was trying to loose weight I thought the same as you but the drink slowed me down. Unless you want the occassional caffeine without the calories drink water

Most diet sodas still have sodium in them which cause you to retain water... Diet Rite is great because it tastes good and only contains carbonation and coloring...

Although diet sodas have little or no calories, they still have sodium, that puts on weight.

they have a lot less calories then non diet but be careful not to have to much like coffee the caffeine in them can make you crave sugar foods therefore defeating the object after all.

Yes and no. as already noted they do cause water retention, but there is another more subtle way it makes your weight loss efforts more difficult: They cause you to crave carbs and sweets.
