It was hyperbole to make a point for sure.
However, it is a fact that one would be better off without the eye than to end up in Hell !!!
I think he was suggesting that you find an easier way though.
You have to read the whole story.
It starts in Genesis, and ends in Revelation.
(He was getting at the fact that He did not come to "abolish the Law". He came to fulfill the Law, by taking all of the punishment for all the wrongs we have done on himself!!! )
So, you don't have to gouge your eye out, just believe He came to save you, and accept him as Saviour !!
After you do that, you are judged as Jesus, because He is taking your place.
There is some more learning to do, but that's a great start. You can then relax and start taking in the blessings, because He has done all that is required.

in the Bible, Christ would use many extreme statements to stress the importance of certain points. When he said this statement in the Bible, he did not intend to tell people to gouge out their eyes and cut off their hands....he was simply stressing the importance of how wrong lust can be.
We all sin and fall short of His glory, and we should never punish ourselves for that...just as Christ will not punish us for it. He's paid our debt, but it's our choice whether we accept Him or not...and I hope and pray that you will do so.

The Inner Eye, obviously.
How do you figure that the eye is guilty more so than you? If I rape a girl with a wooden staff, can I just send the staff to hell and stride into heaven like a freebird?

Kev, you need to gouge them both out, cuz if you leave one intact, it is likely to lust once again and send you straight to hell! Better safe than sorry, dude!
Oh my ... I can't believe I said that! I'm goin' to hell in the same hand basket with you!

That was intended to be a warning, a guideline, a symbol of how severely God viewed sin. He didn't mean it in a physical sense He was just trying to convey the importance of the concept of mental sin as opposed to physical sin....

You could gouge them both out and still go to hell because you rejected Christ as your Savior.

"
And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
" Matthew 5:29
"
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
" Matthew 5:27-28
Actually, for your crime of adultery, you should be stoned to death instead. What do your neighbour think about it?
