Self sufficient is not the same as self-promoting which is not the same as Nepotism. Self-sufficient is a positive trait - "The only successful colony survived because they were self-sufficient."

Self-promoting is self-preservation: "By touting his accomplishments, the entire Board of Directors learned of his capabilities."

Nepotism carries a negative connotation. "The worst popes of the middle ages were elected not through any inherent aptitude for leadership, but because of their aristocratic heritage and Papal Nepotism."

See? So maybe "touting", or "aggrandizing"? Kinda hard to tell what you're looking for.

I think that those are the best words to describe this. I checked out Roget's Thesaurus, and there were no words listed that were so exact. You're trying to find a non-hyphenated word that means "able to regenerate, perpetuate or continue its own existence or reproduction," right? So, yeah, your words are the best for this...

conceited, egotistical, or narcissistic might fit the definition of self-promoting.

Self sustaining might be: independent, absolute, autarchic, autarchical, autonomous, or individualistic
