Kick him.
Just kidding.
He's afraid so he barks. Just love your pet and see what happens.

It could be due to him being over protective of you or your home. It can also be because he is insecure and wants to firmly establish boundries. He sounds like he needs proper socialization. I would look into training, it will enhance your relationship with him. It will also help you learn how to teach him proper behavior in an effective positive manor.
Petsmart has some excellent training for pets. They have certified teachers, keep class sizes low and they are pretty reasonable.
Pets are like children, if you don't teach them proper manners they won't know what is proper behavior and what isn't acceptable. Even older dogs can benefit from training.
In addition it's helpful to read some books on the subject, I highly suggest going to the library and checking out several. Find one you feel comfortable with and then buy a copy from your bookstore. This way you won't end up spending money on a book with methods you don't agree with.
Do not hit, kick, or behave violently towards your dog that is NOT the way to train your dog. Fear is not going to help your dog learn what is expected of him.

Is he barking to alert you or is he being aggressive? If he's being "overly" protective, firmly tell him no, stop or whatever training word works for you. If he's being aggressive it could be that he's not well socialized, which is going to require a firmer hand and some training. Try this link on barking...http://www.canismajor.com/dog/barking.html

Nothing is wrong with him. He may be agressive to others that he sees to protect his owners, his domain, his food, etc. The best thing that I have found to help me with my dog is obedience training. I took my dog to the sessions at Petsmart...obedience school is about $130, but it was worth every cent. It showed me how to work with my dog and to make her obey me. Now, when I tell her to be quiet, sit, lay down, etc. she does it!
God Luck!

He's dominant.
http://www.leerburg.com can give you training tips with dealing with dominant dogs.
I have one too, and she's under 5lbs. It's not the dog, it's the attitude. You just have to train him.

He is probably intimidated. Try to take him to a dog-training school, and a vet to see if anything is wrong with him.

he is maybe still adjusting to his surrounding.. he might be also feeling fear towards the people who looks at him or maybe trying to pet him.. its good for you to let him feel he is loved.. dogs are very sensitive in sensing what is happening around him..
