The world is a harsh place and your grandmother can't protect you forever. I would sit down and talk to your grandmother. What use is buying an expesnive mp3 player and listening to music that you don't want to listen to? Suggest if you can put the music on your iPod after your grandmother listens to the song first. On an even more drastic measure, offer to provide the lyrics to the songs as well. Hopefully your grandmother will be open minded enough to allow you to put songs on your iPod if they are within family friendly guidelines.

I'm a Christian too, a very active one. However, I have a wide selection of music. I used to work at a record label in L.A., so music is a part of my life. I too have Christian music on my iPod, but I agree, I don't like all Christian music. So, I delete the songs that I don't like. Sure the message is great, but hey, you can't possibly like all Christian music. That's like saying because you like country music, you're only going to listen to country musicians and you have to like all country songs. Sorry, it doesn't work that way. You might like Faith Hill and hate Dolly Parton. So, I think you're grandma is over reacting. She may just be a little old-fashioned. It's really hard to talk to grandmas because most of them are already set in their ways. You can however ask your pastor or youth leader to speak with her about your music. I'm sure they'll agree that there is a lot of clean music out there. Your pastor might even have an awesome music collection that you're grandma isn't aware of. And of course the pastors kids listen to all kinds of music as well. Good luck!

Try to find out more about grandmas younger years. Did she go dancing with grandpa when she was young. Talk to her friends and find out if she had and favorite singer. Down loand the songs on your ipod and play it to her. Then ask her if the music made her a bad person.
You can also read the lyrics of the songs you like to her so she can see what they are singing about. Alot of time older people think that the noise equals bad language.
PS findout if she liked elvis - he was very controversial in his days.

Good Luck

Other than pleasing your grandmother, repeated listening to music is called 'positive' reinforcment. The old 'garbage in garbage out saying is real. Stick with a borderline group for 90 days and you will start to talk like them. You have programmed your responces. I did not have to watch my language until I reinforced my vocabulary.

Try to find some Christian music that you like. There are some really great bands out there. My favorite is Mercy Me. It is very much worship music but great sound and lots of songs that could easily cross over into mainstream.

buy a cd walkman, burn some songs to a disk and label it with hymns or christian rock....noone will ever really know unless they are so strict that they will listen to it to make sure..

parents also need to learn the more you push a child away from something, the more tempted they are to do what thier parents don't want them to do...they need to give children space and independance so they can learn on thier own and make thier own decisions....I am a mother, and I'm not going to tell my children what music they can't listen to, unless under 13...

they can voice there opinion about it but the thing is it was a gift to you so they really can not tell you what to listen to you can tell them that you have kept some of the christian song out of respect for them but you would also like to listen to songs of your age group that are clean of any swear words or thing like that and just tell them that you have learn a lot from them that is why you choose the song that are not filthy

Show her some examples of the music you want to listen to and see if she approves. Hopefully your grandmother isn't that grouchy that she won't even listen to your side of the story.
