I have a couple questions:
1) My dad uses 10W30 in the winter and 10W40 in the summer. The manual recommends 10W40. Is he wrong in doing what he's doing?
2) Sometimes when coming to a stop, my RPMS become erratic (I hear a "gearing" noise, and RPMS go up and down between, say, 500 and 1250 and sometimes even more extreme, and sometimes I have trouble with warm starts (RPMS fall and I have to hold the gas in a little to keep it going to get it started) Is there a problem here? The car idles between 750-1000RPM.

oil is fine

open the hood with the engine hot, just shut off but not running, there is a round goldish thing at the front drivers side of the engine with a little black hose coming off it, pull the hose off and smell it, if liquid comes out or it has a strong odor of gas, you have a leaking fuel pressure regulator

To answer your first question no you dad is not doing anything wrong. the 10w30 is a thinner oil and can be pumped through the system easier. In the summer the thicker oil is better so because it is alrady thinned due to the heat (environment).

As for question #2 take it to a shop. In these modern engines there are to many options that can cause this.

TPS
EGR
Mass Air flow
o2 sensor's going nuts.
Carbon build up

Yeah, it's often worth taking it to a shop

The oil is good..
A plugged air filter could be choking the engine... a loose vacuum hose could also produce those symptoms.... If all the hoses are tight and there is a clean air filter, then you probably have a plugged or stuck fuel injector... then try injector cleaner...
the most common cause for your engine to act that way is a loose vacuum hose or in extremes a leaking intake manifold... a good way to tell is if the engine stumbles or gets worst when the brakes are applied....

The oil thing is alright.
Problem 2 could be the IAC (idle air control). You might also try this: Take the air duct off the throttle body and clean the carbon residue out of the throttle plate and bore. This might help a little.

The oil selection is fine, unless you are in a cold climate. Then, I'd go with 5W30. Have a repair shop check out your idling problem.

no biggie on the oil but check the I A R or the idle air control.
