Those scars caused by Lupus, an autoimmune disease. There is more than one type of lupus and it can manifest itself in many ways.
Caroline Dorough (sister of Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough) died from complications of lupus a few years ago. Seal had another form of it, which caused hair loss and facial scarring.
It seems to be more prevalent in women, especially women of color (African Americans, Latinas, Asians and Native American women).
