I realize I am probably asking a very "stupid question" here, but in the modern world, what does it actually mean to be a lord? It's a great honor, isn't it? I'd love more information...

(just curious and wondering about it...)

A man of high rank in a feudal society or in one that retains feudal forms and institutions, especially:
A king.
A territorial magnate.
The proprietor of a manor.
Lords The House of Lords.
(Abbr. Ld.) Chiefly British. The general masculine title of nobility and other rank:
Used as a form of address for a marquis, an earl, or a viscount.
