Jesus is advocating that you have a personal relationship of trust in God, the one who created us (and everything). Like most of us, you probably have a difficult time figuring out, "Who is God?" This is one reason God sent his son Jesus, so we could see what God is like, and what his priorities are.
Another reason God sent Jesus is so we could receive forgiveness of our sins, through Jesus' sacrifice of his life on the cross (a mysterious event that we must accept mostly on faith, that is, without direct evidence of its full meaning or import), although there is a great deal that can be said about it. Jesus advocated the salvation of your body and soul eternally, should you believe in him and in the forgiveness of your mistakes that we obtained through Jesus' sacrificial death.
We obtain this forgiveness by trusting that God is willing to forgive us and accept us into his presence if we accept the leadership (lordship) of Jesus in our lives; and because we ask to be forgiven of our mistakes. Forgiveness is an amazing thing, because it is the only way we can really break the cycle of our mistakes, errors, and deliberate misdeeds. After all, why would you give up your bad behavior if you thought it wouldn't make a difference if you did or not? But if you knew you were given a fresh start, you would be more motivated to change. Jesus advocated a new life in relationship with him.
Jesus also came to earth, as he put it, "to destroy the works of evil." He showed this by healing people of illness, and by expelling evil spirits from people. He asked us to continue this work. The means he outlined that we do this is by doing the same things he did, and by practicing charity (selfless love and generosity) for others, and by not deliberately committing those acts that God has identified as evil, and by continuing to seek God's guidance, and his forgiveness when we inevitably make mistakes. Jesus advocated resisting evil, doing good, and having a prayer relationship with God, in Jesus Christ's name.
Jesus has told us that the things we hold in our hearts (our inner beliefs about the world and each other and about God) will have eternal consequences. He taught that merely practicing outward, religious, morally perfectionistic, "legalistic" behaviors would not get one on God's good side. Only loving God and seeking Him (through prayer and by living according to those things that God says should be our priorities) would give us God's favor. As God's perfect son, Jesus came to show us God's favor and love for us.
To repeat: Jesus said that we could have these things by pursuing a personal relationship with God, one based on our own desire to know him, and upon our own prayers. Churches can only provide help by providing supportive relationships and access to ordinances (such as baptism and the Lord's Supper), but the primary condition is your willingness to know God, and your humility to accept his leadership.
Jesus also promised that God will provide wisdom to those who ask for it, and that those who confessed their faith in Jesus--his lordship, his sacrificial life--would be given all God's blessings. If you want to understand more about Jesus, I recommend reading a plain-English version of the Bible (if you are English-speaking) (e.g., New King James version/NKJV, or New International Version/NIV), starting with the New Testament (the book of Matthew), so you can have an idea of what Jesus did and said. Getting to know Jesus through the Bible is the best way to see what he is advocating.
Your willingness is shown by your sincerity, and by your humility (your willingness to let God's will guide your life, and not your own desires). Jesus said you will not be left alone to do these things by your own power, but that he would send the Holy Spirit (another aspect of God), a spiritual power that will teach you the things of God, and strengthen your resolve in doing God's will.
Jesus advocated a great deal, but what he advocated most was that you love God.

That He is God and you are not!
Jesus IS The Lifeline when you're about to drown
The Morning Star that lights up even the darkest ground.
Jesus IS The Friend that sticks closer than a brother
He offers His Love and promises not to smother.
Jesus IS Truth and ALL that is Good
giving you strength to do what you should.
My friend, Jesus IS All that you could ever want or need
He Loves you as you are and calls you His seed.
Oh Yes indeed, JESUS IS.

The stories and parables attributed to Jesus, advocate one thing in my opinion: weakness.
Love your enemy as yourself: what value does that place on love?
The beatitudes: According to Luke's account of the sermon on the mount, if you willingly subject your self to physical "degradations" (poverty, meekness, hunger, etc.) you will be given on your way to heaven. Ironically, the version most quoted is Matthew's, which turns them from physical to spiritual (poor becomes poor in spirit; hungry becomes hunger and thirst for justice...)
Turn the other cheek: A call from those who wrote the bible (realistically, not according to the mythology), to accept any degradation handed down by those in authority, both secular and spiritual.
There is also many instances where one is encouraged to play the part of the sheep...Jesus himself is even referred to as the lamb of god.
This is just my opinion, and there are parts of the bible that do offer decent advice. The christ myth, however, is just a variant on the Hercules/Heracles mythology. Both are mortal men, born of a woman, fathered by a god, who performed great deeds before returning to the heavens. The difference is that Hercules/Heracles came from a culture that valued strength, while the Jesus myth became a tool to encourage passivity.

Jesus, our advocate, stands in the presence of God almighty in the heavenly sanctuary, after which the earthly tabernacle was modeled. Jesus pleads His perfect life as revealed in the cross of Calvary in the place of our life of failure, in effect contiually applying the cross on our behalf for the forgiveness of sins. He is our faithful High Priest, having been tempted in all points as we are, and slaying sin in the flesh, he knows our weaknesses and can truly say that He will not let us be tempted above which we are able and with each temptation will make a way of escape. There is only one mediator between God and man, the man Jesus Christ.
In the OT sanctuary service, the sacrifice could not be understood fully without the ministration of that blood by the high priest. Likewise, the cross can not be fully understood without a knowledge of the work of our High Priest, Jesus in the heavenly sanctuary, who ministers His blood on our behalf for the remission of sins.

Not the crap that mankind has done in his name. Not the creation of dogmatic tradition and religious following.
I believe he hoped to set an example by his life as a healer among other things for others to work with in the future. Love, hope and faith in ourselves and each other. Endeavouring to love all, and to share. To not need the insecurity of dogmatic power and tradition, to be secure instead in our love for all that lives.
We perverted this with misinterpretation, with war in "his name" and other bullshit. Never ever would someone whom you may describe as the "Son of God" have advocated the creation of religion and dogma. Instead he would have hoped his example, his work would have flowed like a river of live through many generations, example following example. Indeed perhaps some folks this did happen as well. I don't believe any "prophet" would love what has happened in their name since ever. I'm sad about this, and don't believe in religion at all because of it.

In John 6:28,29 the people asked Jesus what they had to do to do the works of God. Jesus said, 'This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.' Jeus Christ is advocating that people believe in Him.
