Feeding tubes either run through the nose to the stomach or directly into the stomach.

Yes ;
Through a NASOGASTRIC TUBE introduced from the nose down to the esophagus to the stomach OR
Through a GASTROSTOMY TUBE introduced from an incision in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen directly to the stomach can be done by open method or endoscopically OR
Through JEJENOSTOMY TUBE introduced into the jejunum [upper most part of small bowel]through an incision in the the upper left quadrant of the abdomen
Through all this tubes a blended food and fluids can be introduced , there are many factors control which one to use
also we can not ignore the use of parenteral feeding which is introduction of nutrient like amino acids and fat and concentrated glucose through a venous line called central line , which is fine catheter introduced down to the the big veins neer the heart.

Typically a tube is surgically placed in their stomach where they recieve something like ensure or a forumula type mixture, and an catheter is placed near the heart to supply hydration and additional nutrients. It is definately NOT an alternative to eating but it does keep a person nurished while in a comatose state. They also do this when people can't eat for any other reason.

Yes, but not by mouth. They have a feeding tube connected to their stomach and are fed liquids through the tube. Some of the liquids contain the nutrients they need to survive. Some is just water...

As a rule, a person in a coma is fed through a gastric tube.

A PERSON WHO IS IN A COMA CANNOT OBVIOUSLY TAKE FOOD OR ANY THING THROUGH THE MOUTH . THERE ARE TWO WAYS YOU CAN FEED OR GIVE NOURISHMENT TO THE PERSON EITHER BY THE NG(NASO-GASTRIC)TUBE OR BY GASTRIC TUBE (GT).THE FIRST ONE WHICH IS THE NGT IS CONNECTED OR PLACE THROUGH THE NOSTRIL OR THE NOSE AND THE SECOND ONE IS THROUGH THE STOMACH.THE FORM OF FEEDING IS PLACE IN DISPOSABLE PLASTIC BAG AND THE FOOD IS IN THE FORM OF LIQUID AS IN A MILK IN A CAN.THESE FEEDINGS ARE RICH IN NUTRITIES AND MINERALS.THE ONLY THING THAT VARIES BETWEEN THE TWO IS NGT IS GOOD ONLY FOR A FEW WEEKS WHILE THE GASTRIC TUBE IS GOOD FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME AND IT IS MORE DISCRET . THE PATIENT WHO IS IN A GASTRIC TUBE FEEDING CAN HIDE IT UNDER THE CLOTHES.WHILE THE FIRST ONE IS NOTICESABLE AT ONCE.

They cannot do anything when they are in a coma so the doctors feed them through tubes.
