You know your daughter best. If she's going to invest the time and energy in learning a quality program and continue using it, then Adobe is a good way to go...an expensive way too. If you want to cut that cost and jump through some hoops yourself, you can get yourself over to CampusTech.com and fill out all the forms necessary to purchase it for her as the qualifying parent using her report card or college ID. You'll have to scan it or photocopy it (her ID or report card). Adobe may make you repeat the process again (there may even be a questionnaire) after CampusTech has completed the order. Adobe is VERY strict about their academic fullfilment procedures. But you will save 51% on Photoshop! ($288 price).
The heavy duty programs are just what they are ...heavy duty...tons of features...sometimes difficult to learn. But if she's into it, she will want to learn it...and will think it's awesome and will grasp it...and will learn what she wants to learn as she needs it. If you buy the lighter program, it may not have the capabilities that she wants and you may end up purchasing another program....and another program....and end up with two or three programs to accomplish various tasks. Haven't we all been there?
Good luck!

Adobe is too much money. Y ou can get two programs that will do the job. (Actually a third that will enhance the possibilities.)
Microsoft has a very good program for about $100
Corel Photo Pro XI is perfect, $100
Then, so she can really fiddle around, get NIX (or NIK) plug ins that will work with both of the above programs as well as photoshop. You only have to install it one time to go into one of the two programs, and then copy and paste it into the other.
Both have different features and there is a lot you can do

As you can see - Photoshop CS2 is the newest and best (www.adobe.com). However, from the sounds of things - this program is more extensive than what she needs. So, my biggest suggestion is to forget this option and those who suggest it and the hefty price of $699.
If you are looking at a decently priced program, JASC Paintshop Pro is around $99. What I would also suggest is a free program called PhotoPlus 6 (www.freeserifsoftware.com). Have her start there as it's a great Photoshop Clone (and it's free).
You can check out some books on Photoshop should you decide that route is what you want. Check out a great website called Amherst Media (www.amherstmedia.com) as it's a great site for photographers. It even has a whole section on using Photoshop for photographers

Adobe Photoshop Elements is great for the student or serious amatuer photographer. Photoshop CS is a full featured imaging program for advanced/professional imaging applications ( and costs more too!)
Many students are overwhelemed by the complexity/flexibility of CS and get frustrated. Start her out on Elements. She will let you know in a year or two if the "fire' is still burning, and if she would like to invest in the full blown professional Photoshop CS software.
Adobe software is currently the industry standard for image manipulation.DO start her out with the Adobe line of products so that she won't have to re-learn from another format.

Photo Shop is the Industry standard. Current version is around $500 - $600, but you can probably find an older, good version with original disks and books on E-Bay, maybe for under $200. Photo Shop 5.0 will suffice, but 6.0 or 7.0 is even better. You DON'T WANT their LITE version, it sucks!
Corel Photo Paint is a good second. I get Version 6 on E Bay for $35, which is an excellent buy.

DO NOT BUY ADOBE PHOTOSHOP!!! Not as a present for your daughter, who I gather is school-age.
If you want to give her the world of Adobe Photoshop without spending the big money for the full product, get Photoshop Elements 5.0. It is a tremendously powerful program and it only sells for $99.00. You can get it at http://www.adobe.com or any of the usual places you buy software.
You can use it practically right out of the box with the "Quick Fix" option and then you can advance into the full program, learning TONS about the Photoshop world as you go. Frankly, I think neither your daughter nor I would ever explore the full capabilities of Photoshop Elements 5.0.
You will find Photoshop Elements 4.0 at closeout for about $40 at several retail outlets as well as on eBay and it's a great program, too. I stuck with 3.0 for a couple of years and didn't get 4.0, because it was not that much of an upgrade and I was never unable to do what I wanted to do, so 4.0 would be great to get. 5.0 adds some higher level features that makes it a worthwhile upgrade from 3.0 and 4.0, so it might be worth the money to you. It was for me.

Photoshop CS is good, but I think there is a more up to date program out there. Go to Adobe.com and look around, or if there is a Frys somewhere close by got there. Or, you know best buy and stuff like that. If you are still having trouble, gt her a Nikon or Canon digital camera! ( Or get me one huh?)

well there's always photography books- like John Hedgecoes for example- or you can get them a photo album or something like that for a portfolio :) if they don't have an editing program on their computer, you could always buy them that :) also, a memory card- that is something that every photographer needs! hope this helps! x

My uncle is a professional photographer who taught it for many years at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He uses Adobe Photoshop on his computer.
Best Wishes and I wish I'd had a dad like you! :o)

Better if a gift is given by spending dollars.
The freeware softwares may come with adware or viruses too.
