Yes, you must pay sales tax. If the dealer in Illinois has an agreement with the state of Wisconsin, they can collect your wisconsin sales tax there, and submit it to the state for you. Actually, if they CAN do it, they MUST do it.

If they don't have an agreement, then you will have to ask the dealer to not collect illinois sales tax, and thus you won't pay sales tax in Illinois. But they also will not issue you a wisconsin vehicle plate, or registration.

When you go to the DMV to register the vehicle, they will ask for the sales paperwork to prove that you own it, they will realize that you haven't paid Wisconsin tax, and will charge you the tax at that time.

There's no way to get around it.

Buying A Car In Wisconsin

You pay the tax wherever you will register the car. I bought a car in Illinois, had it shiped to California and I had to pay Cals. state tax for registration. I believe sales tax is cheaper in Wisconsin. If it's a new car, you may want to have a vehicle swap at a car dealership to avoid all the hastle.

You pay the tax in the state where you register the vehicle, which would be your home state of Wisconsin!

If you buy from a dealer they will have to collect the tax and send it to the correct state, so you won't have to worry about it. If you buy it used from a person the dmv will have forms you need to fill out for transfer of title, and those forms will tell you where to send the sales tax

In other words, you don't have to worry about it, either way the dealer or paperwork will tell you....
