Some tips:
1) When you feel the anger rising inside you... close your eyes (or don't) and breathe in deeply for 5 seconds... hold for 5 seconds... and push out slowly and completely, for 5 seconds.
2) Drink a big glass of cold water; literally cool off... this works.
3) Lay down... it's very difficult to maintain the fight or flight response lying down.
Consider starting a routine each evening before bed where you sit quietly in your room, or lay quietly, with soft music or none, breathe slowly in and out 5 in, hold 5, out 5, and relax each body part one at a time, flex and relax... and visualize that part of yourself you are unhappy with, your temper, disconnecting from your body and head and filling a big red balloon... then let it float high away from you... see it explode, and all the anger just evaporate into the atmosphere. This is just one of many ways to meditate and release...
Also consider an Anger Management work shop...

If you have tried all the usual steps, taking an emotional step back, walking away from the situation, etc. and you find that you are still dealing with excessive anger, you may want to consider something...it could be you have high blood pressure. High BP can and does effect many people, no matter what their lifestyle may be. It does and can effect anger. People with high BP tend not to handle difficult and / or anger causing situations well. Exercise helps many people, a basic thing like walking, or spinning, or a treadmill can be life saving in terms of stress management. Please consider seeing your doctor about your problem. Perhaps seeing a therapist would help as well, but you may want to rule out illness first.

2. Walk away from that situation, take a walk.
3. Talk with a friend.

Not very well. I'm a very shy person, so even around people I know well, it can be very hard to talk about problems. I tend to freeze up, and become very withdrawn. My friends have to force me to talk, otherwise I'd go crazy keeping all my anger and stuff to myself. At least I'm lucky, I've got friends that stick by me, and at least are able to help me deal with problems.
Loud music helps, at least for me. Not sure how, but it helps so much to release tension and calm down a bit.
I also write in a journal a lot, it helps me sort out everything thats going on, and keep anger and emotions in check when all hell breaks loose.

Music definitely sooths me... it's an easy access thing that definitely brings me out of my 'state'.
Also, it's exciting to go outside at night (around 3 to 6 am) and feel the cool breeze. There's barely any cars on the road... and it's just a calming feeling for me. It's probalby not as fun because it's winter, but still... the point is to treat yourself to something that relaxes you, whether it's a massage or something.

I would have a serious anger problem, as my dad does and a combination of upbringing and genetics make it inevitable. But watching my dad throw tantrums and abuse me and others in my family has saved me from acting that way. I usually hold it inside, which isn't good for me. But it doesn't burst out all at once like everyone says it does. I just go to be alone.

What #**^+%# ANGER ??? No, really, try to lighten up a bit. Reallize that you don't need to carry the world on your shoulders, especially when there are other shoulders that could help. And if it's an individual who's the problem, then try to visualize him/her wearing a funny diaper. They don't look as threatening that way. And some people hate it if they can't get you to be as upset as they are. That will be $15.

Sometimes anger is one way our brain stimulates the release of blood sugar into the blood stream - if it senses it is low. Check out www.hufa.org, especially the symptoms link.
Eating for low blood sugar may help keep your temper under control.
