I've tried talking to them about lung cancer, smelling like an ash tray, general good health, etc. Nothing really gets through to them. Any ideas?

People have to want to quit or it won't work. However, you might try showing them some photographs of normal and diseased lungs. I think smokers have a hard time hearing about the dangers of smoking, but if they can visualize what is happening . . it might make a difference. But, it's really up to the smoker to become determined to stop, no one else can convince them.

First off, I'll never forget the time I walked into a card game where one of the old ladies, who had smoked for a good portion of her life, had to press on a HOLE IN HER THROAT in order to talk. Let them see what emphysema does to you. The effects....when you see the faces ruined by it.

Also, if they're socially aware, they'll realize that people look UBER trashy when they smoke. Best thing is early action..nicotine can be more addicting than cocaine.

As far as i am concern, it is not really an answer but sort of opinion. A person who is addicted to smoking can't easily give it up, but once a person surrenders to God not only his/her attitude would be changed but his/her entire being including his vices. We cannot change our old self into a new being unless we have Jesus in our hearts. In our own strenght you cannot change these young people or you cannot persuade them to stop smoking unless God works in them. So i think you better start praying for them and you can see the difference. May Godbless you and your whole family.

Get their insulin tested. If what I have read is accurate, smoking helps keep high insulin from doing what it naturally does. High insulin leads to pre-diabetic syndromes, diabetes and heart trouble.

A fasting blood insulin test (needs a doctor to prescribe) costs about $80-90 cash (discount for cash).

There is info about hypoglycemia (one of the pre-diabetic syndromes) at www.hufa.org - but denial can be one of the symptoms of low blood sugar, so I don't think they will be receptive to that info either.

Good luck.

Talk is cheap. Try punching them in the face.
