All the above answers are correct, however, I personally believe that you can't eat enough in one setting to make you really drowsy. It's long been my belief that the drowsy effect on Thanksgiving Day comes from carbon monoxide poisoning, from having your oven and 4 burners going at the same time for many hours. It has nowhere to go but inside your house and in your lungs. Ever get drowsy after eating a turkey sandwich? Nobody ever talks about getting drowsy after any meals the rest of the year; just Thanksgiving. Add in the factor that it is usually cold out and in addition to the stove running for hours upon end, there are usually a lot more people in your house on Thanksgiving. They breathe up a lot of additional oxygen, which induces drowsiness also not to mention the co put out by the warm, cozy fiteplaces etc. Oops! Didn't mean to write a book: just my opinion that's all! :)

It's not a drug, it's an amino acid called tryptophan. It is the precursor to serotonin, which is believed to play an important role in the regulation of body temperature, mood, sleep, emesis (vomiting), sexuality and appetite.

Tryptophan. But they say there's not enough it it to really cause you to be sleepy. It's a combo of all the other foods you consume at once that make you crash and burn on Thanksgiving!!!
