Cut the carbs, such as breads, pasta, grains and rice. Don't worry about fat, fat is part of a healthy diet. Just go for the meals, exercise and don't be a couch potatoe and your bound to burn more calories then you take in.
And oh yeah, eating fat free foods will actually make you fatter because you will take in more calories do to the fact that Fat makes you feel full.

Read the label. If it has sugar or high fructose corn syrup in it. Don't eat it. Avoid high carb foods: things with wheat, potatoes, pasta... If it is bigger than the palm of your hand, then the serving is too big. Eat fruits and cottage cheese. Eat less but more often, but always eat healthy. And*sigh*, exercise.

I am convinced that eating a hearty breakfast soon after waking, then a good balanced lunch and then a small supper at least 4 hours before going to bed is the answer. (No snacking) Also drinking plenty of water cuts down on cravings for snacks.
