(1) Can a border collie ever be laid back and calm?
(2) How Much exercise is the right amount?
(3) How much do they cost?
(4) Is the border collie right for me?

I'm still in school. I would give up tv and computer time to train and exercise my dog. I would probably put my dog in a dog sport. I would train my dog to do tricks of all sorts. I'm not into human sports but I want to stay healthy by being active. I do not like big, scary dogs. So, is this the right breed or do I need to find another breed?

Well to start off, it all depends with their laid backness. Like, my border collie, if i dont exercise him for about two hours a day, he's bouncing off the walls. Now the exercise amount also depends. My border collie, he needs about two hours, and not all at once. Like me, i take him for a run around our neighborhood twice before i go to school, than when i get home take him twice, and than after supper around sixish i take him for a walk. Between our after school run, and supper i also sit outside and let him just run around our yard. It's best to have a fenced in yard, or at least a yard to let them run around in. But if they dont exercise, they'll go go crazy, and get into all kinds of mischief.

I got my border collie for free, but before i got him, I had been looking and generally for already regestered pups, the price can range from $300 - $600.

And as for if the border collie being right for you, i do believe so. If your really wanting it, and willing to work for training him/her((which by the way isnt that hard, seeing as how Border Collies are one of the smartest breeds, and are eager tto learn and please)). But yeah..... just do what I did, a whole lot of research. Libraries, internet, whatever you can find. It helped a whole lot. At first your puppy will of course be hyper, like all puppies. Than, at about two years he'll mellow out, hopefully, depending on how much attention is given to him. And by about five years ((from what i'v seen of other border collies, mine is only about three years and he's calmed down from the eight month puppy we got him as a whole lot)) they will be so much better. Wont need as much exercise as a younger one, but still exercise is. Just walking takes away negative energy. Just watch "The Dog Whisperer" he is always telling people to walk their dog.

But yeah.... Thats about all i can tell you, other than border collies are great companions and you'll deffinantly stay active. Best of Luck and Wishes with you. Hope my advice helped

1.) When they're asleep. J/K. They are pretty intense dogs and if you don't provide them with interesting things to do they'll come with their own solutions.
2.) A couple of good walks/day. If you have a safe place and a frisbee or tennis ball, you won't wear yourself out!
3.) There are Border Collie rescue chapters around the country. The cost is low but they'll generally give you a serious interview to satisfy themselves that you are right for a Border Collie.
4.) With the limited information you've given it's tough to answer this question definitively. But what you wrote sounds good.

Border Collies are very high stung. I would say get a mutt from a shelter, it can still be a border collie. Maybe 100 dollars at a good shelter. The right amount of exercise is when the dog is popped. If u want a puppy email me and I will get u in contact with a breeder.

no they are never laid back and calm they are very high energy dogs bred to worl everyday. (herding sheep for example) when they get really old they lose some energy like everyone else.

they need exercise everyday!! for at least 30 min-an hour.

depends where you live and how well bred it is. (dont buy froma petstore)

the main thing you need to consider is time and money. these dogs can get very destructive if left alone inside or to just sit in the yard all day, they need mental and physical stimulation, if they get bored they go crazy!! you should consider if you can properly care for a dog while your still in school. dogs cost alot of money. food, vet bills, treats, heartworm preventative. flea/tick control, grooming, boarding, teeth cleaning, training, toys, etc.. maybe consider an animal that is not so time consuming and expensive

I had a Border Collie for 15 years and I could never ever replace her.
They are one of the most intelligent breeds of dog.
They need a lot of exercise as they are bred to round up sheep and work on farms.
They are extremely loyal.
