I gave my 1 yr old Beagle a pigs ear to chew on 2 days ago and now she has diarrhea.....mucous and a little blood. Could that be the cause?

All shots and vet exams are up to date, including parvo vaccination.

My first thought would be that the pig's ears disturbed worms, as they often cause a smear of blood, mucous and diarrhea when they release there biting hold on the intestines..But the ears themselves may have caused a trauma to the lower intestines, depending on how they have been preserved and flavored..
I would feed her just rice (cooked with extra water, and cooked extra long) with a little chicken or burger until she can see the vet..

We avoid the pigs ears as they can be chewed into some brittle pieces. It's a slight possibility. Has she gotten anything else new to eat, scraps, change of food?

There are several types of worms that cause bloody stool and are serious. You will not see the worms, microscopic. Unless there is a drastic change in condition, vomiting and worse stool, really bloody and unforgettable smell you can hold till Monday to see the vet/ at least call, appointment.

No more treats. Possibly moisten dry food easier to digest and plenty of water. Do not give any people meds of course. If in doubt put in emergency call to vet.

My dogs eat pig ears, but they don't have problems with it. I guess it's possible. If you peel the ear back one layer at a time you may find that some of the edges are sharp and pointy AND the fat content is VERY high. I'd call the vet and ask for a professional opinion.

Bloody diarrhea in any animal is a cause for concern and the animal needs to be taken to the vet.

As for pig ears, I've heard that they can carry various bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella. I've read about people getting sick from handling the dog treats but I'm not sure if dogs can get sick from these bacteria.

I have gave my dogs alot of pig ears and have never experainced that before,,, That sounds like parvo I would give your vet a call and let them know what is going on cause if its parvo then it can kill very quickly the faster you get them to the vet the better chances are of survival i hope that your little girl is ok but please call your vet ASAP

I wouldn't know too much about something like that, but here is what I recommend if you are so worried : Maybe you should stop feeding her pig ears. Just until you figure out what is wrong with her from the vet.

There has always been a chance of salmonella in pigs ears and raw hides for a very long long time. they have been known to kill dogs also but not because of the salmonella but because they get lodged in the intestines or the esophagus. BUT alot of people do not know this and u r doing a great thing by letting people know.

I have pups, and they eat pig ears all the time, and they dont ever get sick from them. I think that your dog might have parvo, take him to a vet asap!

probably, (about pig ears)These porcine treats can carry salmonella - not usually a danger to a healthy dog, but a potential hazard to humans handling them. If not well chewed, they can cause intestinal blockages.

Not in my dogs it doesn't , they love they're pigs ear treats and it's never affected them badly .
But what you are describing sounds like a stomach, bowel or gut infection to me , I have known that to be caused by certain drugs. See a vet if it persists .
