Aside from the personal growth and enjoyment derived from said pursuit, reading is empowering and opens many doors. In our recent past, slaves were rarely provided opportunity to learn to read. This was to maintain a level of oppression. In some countries today, women and children are similarly stifled.

You don't truly appreciate the value of reading until you go to a foreign country where you don't know a word of the language and don't understand their alphabet. All of a sudden you can't do the most ordiinary things. You can't read a paper. You can't read signs in a store. You can't read street signs, or find your way around town. You can't understand prices or the money system, and have to rely on holding out bill and trusting that a strange person is going to take the right amount and give you the correct change.
You can't understand road signs, or warning signs, or 'no parking' signs, or any of the other signs that help make driving safer and easier.
You can't read the newspaper to find out what is happening, can't read a book for relaxation and enjoyment. Can't play on the internet, read a menu -- there are so many things that suddenly, you can't do. It's a terribly frustrating experience.
Reading makes it possible for us to communicate with others, for a variety of reasons. For work, for pleasure, for personal communication. It makes us possible to learn from others, through books, through magazines, through newspapers, and through other mediums of communication.

Reading is important because it helps to better describe definitions that are otherwise learned through a dictionary. It helps in spelling too, which is why I truly believe most of the people who answer these questions, don't know how to read. Just look at how they try to spell what they're typing.

Helps improve your grammar, vocabulary, much like what the guy aboves said. ALSO...history's most important information and knowledge are all found in what? NOT freakin tv, or the news, or the internet, because although it may have pertinent info, it also can be false or opinionated. While documentation, actual books, the ACTUAL constitution itself, can only be READ, hence....how will you know if you can't read? Not to mention half the important information you have to relay to anyone else (for example..yahoo answer?), you have to be able to read in order to communicate or send the reply. Hell you woudln't be able to watch tv, or know about certain events while driving without being able to read......it's just way too important for one to NOT to be able to read (although people have gone through life without it...i.e. Fantasia).

Well first off, it's fun! You gain a vast imagination, and reading takes you places (cliche I know, but true!). You get to learn different words too, so you can sound smart. And, if you read more, you will be able to write better as well. Also, if you have a big reading level, people respect you intellectually.
