You will pay the same amount if not more in extra interest and yearly fees as a $300 beginning balance secured card. Plus, banks and credit unions WILL treat their customers better than most big credit card companies that accept customers with bad credit.

Some of these companies that charge the annual fees and such can be hard to deal with. Just try to do research on them and you will find that they don't even have a Customer Support number readily available for you on their websites.

I work with online companies and see chargebacks more with high credit line cards when customers have not received their merchandise or have real problems with their charges. My suggestion is to try and keep accounts with the companies that have the better customer service and work hard at keeping you their customer.

4 types of cards available to those with bad credit.

1. Secured credit cards - this is probably the most cost effective card available. Make sure the card you choose does not charge any processing fee, has a reasonable annual fee and reports to the three credit bureaus.

2. Unsecured credit cards - there are many companies that have credit cards that cater to those with bad credit. The annual fees tend to be high, you may be charged a processing fee and a monthly maintenance fee. Most report to the major credit bureaus.

3. prepaid credit cards - you seem to know about this.

4. Catalog cards - These are cards that can only be used at the issuers store. The most famous issuer is USA Credit. You cannot use these cards elsewhere, but they do give you a credit line and your activity is reported to one credit bureau.

IMO - best to get a secured credit card if you have bad credit.

If there's any credit card that you should try (or attempt) to apply for is one through Capital One. Even if your credit score is so-so, they work to rebuild and re-establish your credit rating. Simply pay the balance every month and avoid spending over the limit.

Try bankrate.com under credit cards. they are going to charge you a large yearly fee, but it will build your credit so you can get a better card in the future.
