It is jacket with long arm sleeves worn by mentally unstable people that could hurt themselves or others. When wearing one, the sleeves are tied behind the back and it looks like the person wearing it is hugging himself.

a straight jacket is a jacket they use to restrain people who is out of control ....it ties you up....
