Don't.
A pet is a serious investment. If right up front you're saying you don't want to shell out the money for the dog, how do you plan for his care? Animals need routine vet visits and shots. Spaying or neutering is not free. It all costs money.
What is your plan if he gets sick? Hit by a car? What if it turns out he has a chronic condition like allergies and needs medication and/or special prescription food? All this runs thousands of dollars--trust me, because I'm paying it now. It's not a question of if he will need this expensive care, it's when.
Even the up-front costs of adopting a dog from the SPCA are not cheap.
A dog is a living being and not something you pick up on a "bargain" basis. If you're already concerned about your finances before you even have the dog, you are clearly not ready to be a pet owner.

Breeders only deal with purebreds-never get a animal from a breeder for they inbreed too much, probl with kennels a lot of dogs and germs can get passed from the othr dogs. Contact PETSMART-deal with a lot of Resue Groups and have adoptions SAT and Sunday-and PETSMART Store. Also the pound has many all sizes, all breds even purebred dogs-you'll also save a life. Humane Society-dog will have all shots and has been health cleared and ready for adoption. Dogs though the ones I menioned are alslo assessed for aggessiveness an if unpredictable or too agressive will be termed not adoptable so you know you are getting a healthy and friendly, safe dog

Go to the web and find out what type of dog would be best for you and your family. It all depends on where you live, can they run, or do they have to be chained or fenced in? Do you want an inside lap dog, or an outside larger breed? Do you have children? Check out all of these on a dog website and there are plenty of dogs who need good homes at your local dogshelter, or call your local vets in the area for information they may have. If you decide on a certain breed, check out your dog rescue areas on the web and they will be more than happy to help you out. Remember, God created all animals, so there's got to be one out there for you. Good Luck

Check your local yellow pages for animal shelters or animal pounds. You can find a great dog there and have the added joy of knowing you saved a life.

Call up your nearest Petsmart and ask what rescue group they work with. With the one here, their adoption fee for a dog is $100. That includes up to date shots, spay or neuter, and a v-chip. Plus, the money goes back to helping other dogs. They foster the dogs so they can tell you all about them like if they're good with kids, other dogs, cats, their temperament.

Look on Petfinder.com. You can type in the kind of dog you and and your area, and it will show all the dogs that are in local shelters near you. And even if you don't find one on the internet, you can still find different shelters that you can visit that are in your area. They sometimes don't get all the dogs updated cause new dogs come in every day. Good Luck!!

Check in your local paper under the Classifieds section (under Pets), sometimes people advertise their pets for sale at inexpensive prices. You can also try Craigslist, or also go to the pound. Hopefully this information is helpful!

Check the animal shelters. There are dogs of every breed that have been abandoned through no fault of their own. I'm sure they are eagerly looking for someone to rescue and show them some love.
