In all honesty, nothing much has happened in Muslim world. I know there must be some, but where are the great doctors and physicists and chemists. Where are the authors and humanitarians. Where are the film makers and musicians, the artists. I have no negative feelings about Islam, yet many Muslims think its alright to kill me, to take my life because I don't don't believe as they do. And its not just me. Muslims kill Muslims and feel its alright because they don't believe exactly the same way. It seems that the religion stifles creativity, represses women, brainwashes children. I think that Christianity does much the same thing, but no as bad. The same with Judaism. The crazy thing is, they all have exactly the same roots. I would ask where is the moderate voice of Islam. Where are the peacemakers. Where is the love of their fellow man.

Most of us don't know much about Muslims because we don't know very many of them personally. I am sure it is the same in predominantly Muslim countries, where most people don't know very many Christians personally.
Right now, I don't even know any Muslims personally, although I have in the past; but they have moved away or I have moved away and we lost touch. Even then I did not know many.
I am learning about Islam by reading, though.
I hope that Muslims in predominantly Muslim countries are also trying to learn about Christianity and Judaism and other religions. It is helpful for people to understand each other.

Well, the Muslims I know seem like very nice, peace-loving people. But then I hear all sorts of things from either the media or pundits who think they know what's going on. Then, we have the parnoid people who say all sorts of stupid things. So, I'm sort of at a disadvantage here. I learned about Islam in world history and world religions. So, how am I naive? Are you insinuating that they are bad or something? You can't judge a religion by what a few fanatics do.

alot of non-muslims believe in what the media tells them .......... lies. and they end up believing because they dont have time to sit and open the quran and see what islam is all about. if they would just ignore all of the false info that goes around and just pick up a good islamic book or visit the masjid and talk to an imaam, they would understand. but i guess some would just rather leave it the way it is and some actually try to understand islam and when they do they convert. may allah help us all before its too late, cuz then there wont be any turning back. may allah protect us and guide us all. take care and salaam(pe@ce) and thanks for taking the time to read my answer. :)

Not sure I understood the question, however I dont believe naivity
is the problem if I understand the question, ignorance and intolerence is the problem, which both non muslims and muslims are guilty of.

Because many Americans never actually learned about the religion or their beliefs before 9/11 and now, it is really hard to know what to believe because our society is telling us so many different things. Personally, I know that it is not the Islamic faith...it is the muslim extremists. I recently watched an old episode of West Wing that was filmed after September 11 and one of the characters said "Christianity is to the KKK as Islam is to Muslim extremists" Think about that one...

I would like to know why they are so naive about religious racist bigots. Your question sounds like one being asked by just such a bigot.
But if you are asking why Americans are so lacking in knowledge about Islam, then that is just the result of poor education and being victims of the TV propaganda machine.
