when I was growing up there was a wonderful man who ran the local drug store, who loved children and was considered as kind of an adopted uncle to all the kids in my town. He was an elder in the church and a wonderful Christian man, but when he got older he developed brain tumors. He was slowly and painfully dying, and his family was suffering. Nobody can even be certain if he was in his right mind the night he quietly left his house, walked out into the river and drowned himself. His death was considered by all to be a suicide.

How do you know he drowned himself? People with diseases, especially ones that affect the brain, can do some pretty crazy things that seem logical to them. Perhaps he decided to go for a swim. Maybe he went for a walk and fell into the river. Brain tumors can mess with your equilibrium. We can't possibly know what was going through his mind.

Only God really knows the answer to this question because we can never know if he drowned himself intentionally or if it was an accident. Considering the previous information you gave us about the man and his life I'm betting on the accident. If this man truly knew God and was an elder in the church he would know it's a sin to take your own life.

First off let me say I am very sorry for this loss....It's a horrible outcome /ending for what seems like a very nice man. He is no longer in pain and is no longer suffering.

The question you ask no mortal can answer.....no matter who you ask and no matter what religion they are or even if they are the Pope.....no mortal can answer. Who are we to judge ? Who are we to actually know the truth ?

People may try to tell you things which they think you want to hear in order to console and comfort you......that doesn't make it the truth though. All that can be said is that he was a good man. A kind man. A man who is no longer in pain and is no longer suffering. That is all that can be said.

peace be with you and sorry for the loss. the world needs more good and kind people...now more than ever.

If this man had accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Saviour, then he is in heaven. Brain tumors can effect the brain in weird ways. The tumor can be pressing against the brain with such a strong pressure, that it could cause a person to do things they would normally not do.

The man's death could be ruled a suicide, but if there was no autopsy, then there is no ruling on whether or not he committed suicide or the tumor caused him to do something like he did.

I'm sure he made his peace with God before he went to the river.

The poor man had brain tumours, so you say, how could he possibly make a conscientious decision on whether he was committing suicide or not...

Your God takes everyone, so you preach..I'm sure this nice old man is in Heaven now.

Sorry, not a Christian, an Atheist, but I do understand you Christian beliefs and concerns.. so please stop asking for "Christians only".. it's becoming rather racist..

edit: to Oldguy63...yes it is a Catholic issue. I was raised a Catholic..if you mess up one of the commandments, there is no forgiveness.. and no it's not nonsense, it's just another "dumb" religion.

I'm very sorry to hear of this. May you be comforted. Brain tumors can affect a person's judgement if in that area of the brain. If this is the case, he did not commit suicide. If he did have clear thought of what he was doing, PRAY for him every moment you can. He may be in purgatory and not hell. Only God knows.

Biblically speaking, he is in the bosom of Abraham until the second coming. DO NOT let these nay-sayers tell you that this man went to hell. The only one who knows truly if he was in his right mind is God. Perhaps this was God's way to end his suffering. If he had accepted Jesus as the Lord of his life, then 100% guarantee he will be greeted into eternal paradise when we are called up to meet Him in the air on the day of judgment.
I am not sorry for this loss, because it wasn't that. "For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain." -Philippians 1:21

I truly pray that you will seek the Lord and His guidance in this matter. He never fails. Please remember, "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints." - Psalms 116:15

God will judge him or anyone else on their deeds in life. God knows all mitigating circumstances and how others feel about others.

When the End comes and names are not found in the Book of Life people will have mixed feelings, but we either accept God has made the most correct judgement on things or we don't accept it. If you're a Christian you can see God directly as promised by Jesus and if you feel you can argue the merits of a case with him and his judges, do so if you really you know more than God. That is the right of any Christian as promised by Jesus. Only through him can you reach the father.

What a mystery cause right now he is aleep until the resurrection. Some do say if one commits sucide they cannot repent and will go to hell. Neverthless the lord thy God has the last say so over any man soul. I guess one will have to wait until that resurrected time to find out where he truly went.

The bottom line is that no one knows, because the Bible tells us that the "Lord knows those who are His." and so none of us really know for sure if anyone is truly saved or not, until eternity. However having said that If he was a genuine Christians and it appears from what you said that he was then he would be in heaven today. The idea that if you commit sucide you automatically go to hell is not at all a Bible teaching, I think it is Catholic and is based one idea that because you die committing a sin and you can't repent then you can't be forgiven, is totally Biblical foolishness. That would mean that any one who hadn't confessed every single sin in their lives would be in hell. We go to heaven because of our faith in Jesus Christ not because we meticuously connfess every sin. Salvation is not by works but by grace through faith. In the book of Hebrews it says 6:10 "For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints." God saves a life not one action .

Since the man had tumors, his mind was not clear. I think he deserves to go to heaven, but i cannot say for sure. I am not God, therefore i cannot say whether or not he is in heaven. I just hope he is since he sounded like such a good christian man.
