Assuming your flight is not delayed and you actually have 5 hours, it is possible, but NOT recommended. The chances of getting stuck in traffic going or returning to EWR are very high. Also, there is not enough time to really enjoy anything that NYC has to offer....Stay at the airport, grab a bite to eat, and relax...

Not really. With NO traffic you can make it into the city in about 40 minutes. But you can never count on there being NO traffic. There is a chance that the 40 minute trip could take you almost 2 hours. You could make it to NYC and back, but there would be no time to really do anything and the cost to travel by cab or limo would probably not be worth it.... However... You would probably have enough time to go to Liberty Park in NJ. Newark Airport is exit 14 a, b, or c and Liberty Park is also an #14 exit. From there you can see the NY skyline and if your timing is good you can take a quick ferry to The Statue of Liberty and possibly Ellis Island. There is definitely time for that!

Let's see...depending on what time of the day it is--let's say it's not rush hour--about an hour to get from Newark to NYC, and you'll need to be back at the airport about an hour prior to your flight, and an hour back--that's three of your five hours. So if you want to rush around and grab a pizza and see Times Square you might be able to pull that off. Not much of a visit but you could say you've been there.

no - I've seen days when it would take longer than that to cross the bridge and turn around and come back. You could probably get a ride to the river so you could see the skyline and get back in time for your flight.
