I travel 720 miles roundtrip (I rent a room and sleep in it weeknights only) every week for my job, while maintaining my old residence, relationships, etc.. on the weekends. Can I deduct this mileage as a business expense?

In general, if you are on a temporary work assignment, you can deduct your mileage, food, and lodging on form 2106 which will carry over to your Schedule A. By "temporary", I mean that the job has lasted less than a year and it is not expected to last more than a year in total. As soon as the job is expected to last more than one year, or as soon as it does last more than one year, it is no longer considered a deductible expense.

TaxMan is right!!
Only if your job is temporary. If you are like me and moving far from your job while renting a room close to the office and staying in it during the week, then it is not deductible.
