My dog had allergies, the vet said to give him CLARITIN "not D" twice a day. I have since noticed he is drinking alot of water, seems depressed, his belly is hard and he's sleeping alot. Is this cause for concern or is it because he's resting and feels better now that he is not itching. He is an 87 pound shephard mix. What should I do, or am i over reacting?

Stop the claritin it isnt the best thing for dogs. For sure not twice a day. It has a chemical that is bad for dogs. Use Bendryle (Spelled Wrong) instead it worked for me. Please email me if u have any problems. THank you.

There are very few actual doggie meds, most are the same things we humans take. I have heard of using Benadryl for allergic itching. Those are a antihistamine and can make drowzy and more thirsty. However, is the dog urinating as much as before meds?? Little concerned over hard belly. Is he constipated which can cause that, as in humans. Some meds can cause that. A little scoop of margarine in his food dish will help that. If he is retaining urine then call vet quickly. Bad side effect.
Vets use a lot of meds for skin allergies, some costly and side effects.
Here's a good product for the itching, no drugs. We use a tea tree/aloevera spray on the irritated/gnawed areas once dog has been bathed in good shampoo/fleas treated, etc. Used this on dogs that had been on meds for years. Use couple times a day until the gnawing slows down/stops. Keep on hand. Some dogs have crazy allergies or 1 flea will have them chewing themselves to blood. Carried in all pet stores near shampoos. Both ingredients are antiseptic in nature.

Unfortunately, a dog can not tell us if a med is making it feel worse or weird! You know your dog's nature so keep a eye on. The hard belly could be a problem. Don't ignore your gut instincts!!

Call your vet ASAP sounds like he could be having a reaction to the medication. Claritin is a non-drowsy formula your dog should not be sleeping so much and the extra water consumption and hard belly also have me concerned. Run this past the vet just to be sure.

You should probably check a doctor and not a vet on whether or not Claritin, a usual human drug, should be used on dogs. I also believe that Benedryl helps with itching for dogs. My Chinese Shar-pei gets a lot of skin problems and itching. The veterinarian recommended it and it always works.

P.S. That swollen belly could be constipation due to the drug, but i'm not that sure.

I would stop the claritin. Every vet I know has always recommended benadryl. I would call him, tell him the claritin is not good, and then ask how much benadrly you are supposed to give him.

claritin (loratadine) is an antihistamine like benadryl that dries you up, that's probably why he is drinking more water on the box it should may cause drowsiness

Think he may be having a reaction to the drug,You will need to call your vet and ask him if the meds will cause your pet to be depressed.Probably would cause him to be listless,as it causes a human to be listless taking a depressant.

Our vet told us to use Benedryl with our dogs. Children's Benedryl for the chihuahua. Suggest this alternative to your vet?
