Im a Chicagoan also. My wife is from Puerto Rico and we go visit her family a couple times a year. We will be there for Christmas and New Years this year. Ive not been there for teh holidays before, but the wife says its a blast. They know how to party in PR. We typically stay in Condado or Isla Verde. The Condado Plaza is nice and across San Juan Bay is the Caribe Hilton. Very nice. The views are fantastic. You should visit El Yunque (The Rainforest) and of course you have to go see El Moro the old Spanish Fort over San Jaun Harbor. I suggets touring the Bacardi Brewery. I went for the rum, but quickly developed a real appreciation for the liquor and history. There is a wonderful resort on the west coast named El Conquistador. Is a bit secluded from teh touristy areas and is very nice. There is great scuba / snorkling there and a ferry that takes you to a private island for sun and fun. There is too much to list really. Send me an Email if you have more questions.

Go to old San Juan. Is really pretty there. Go to El Morro Castle and La Fortaleza y El Capitolio. The are all in San Juan. Go to El Yunque Rain Forest. The Caves of Camuy. If you have time drive to Fajardo and take the Ferry to Culebra o Vieques. Those 2 islands are beautiful and they have the 3 most gorgeaous beach in the world!
