It is easier to train an older dog than a pup,as they understand better what we want.Try taking your pet out to potty on a regular schedule, and don't allow it to play outside after it does its job, bring it directly back in and it will soon learn what it is suppose to do when you take it outside. If you let it play after potting,it won't understand why it is being taken outside.

It is not impossible to potty train an 8 year old dog. If the dog is healthy, free of infection or health issues, it can be done.

no u have to have a lot of patience though. the speed will depend on the dog. eveytime he goes potty in the house tell him no and immediatley put it outside try to take it out every 2 hours because dogs do not like soiling their living space so it should naturaly want to use the potty outside. so u basically just have to always let him know its not right to do it in the house and try to disiplin him right after he does it if its after the fact he will not understand and as long as u let him out often he should catch on quikly

Although my answerr will be at the bottom of the list, I hope you will read this. I just read in a Dog Medical book that older dogs, especially spayed females are incontinent...meaning they can't hold their urine and have to pee frequently. If your dog dribbles urine without squatting or you notice her peeing a lot, she may be incontinent and need medication.
Most older dogs will not use the bathroom in their sleeping area and are quick to realize that houses are people's sleeping area. I would bet this dog has a problem...I take in stray, homeless dogs...I live in the country and many dogs come to my house starving and I feed them, bathe them and let them sleep in the house...they never go to the bathroom in my house and they have never been anyones pet. They always go to the door in the night and I know they need to go to the bathroom.
An 8 year old female is menopausal even if she is spayed and she just has to pee all the time. Take her to the vet and give her some medicine.
I should mention that it can also happen to male dogs...does a dog walk around sort of dribbling or pee without squatting or raising a leg? Urinary alert.

Crate training is the answer. You can teach old dogs new tricks, it just takes time and patience. Since your dog is older, he can hold his bladder, so crate training is probably the easiest solution.
Good luck!

Yes, it's not true that you "can't teach an old dog new tricks". You have to show the dog who is boss, and generally they want to please their humans, encourage him to do what you want and give him a snack/reward. Dogs do not need to be walked 3 miles to poop, but they naturally don't want to on their own "turf" if they can avoid it.
