Check my other question for more details. To make this short, why does some people choose to become a merceary? I can't pictures how the life could be good at all. Yet my grandfathers and father did it. My son doesn't know they were a mercenary and he's doing the same thing they were doing. Why is it like this for them?
Other things that really bother me is my grandfather and father who survived everything end up suicide when they were too old to be of any service. We believe they did it becaue they weren't happy to be away from battle field.

Because they are born to be soldiers. Many many men are born to fight. Mercenaries are a select group. As far as the unfortunate suicides you speak of, it may not be that they "weren't happy to away from the battle field."
It may have been that they were haunted by all the people they killed or murdered or maimed or tortured.
I understand when you get older, you have a lot of time to think about the things you have done.
Its doubtful they wanted to be on ANY battlefield anymore.

To some the taste of battle is very addicting. I'm currently in Afghanistan and being in contact with the enemy is an adrenalin rush. I'll be ready to go home when its time but for now its better than bungy jumping, sky diving and driving really fast.

Why do cooks spend so much time in the kitchen??? Carrie....I apologize. I did not read the entire question!! Sorry for your loss. Those I know who have been in the military do it for experience, for a jump on their career, and/or honer and service to their country. I'm proud of all of them!! For some people facing death and killing is very addictive, plus the pay is pretty good!
